Holding it in does in fact help. This exercise works the transversus abdominii muscle which, shaped like a corset spanning from the spine all the way round the midsection, works to hold in your gut. By pulling and holding in your tummy, you are actually contracting the transversus abdominis.

See the link.

Crunches, on the other hand work the rectus abdominus muscle. This muscle's function is to bring your ribcage closer to your hips. This is in contrast to the trasnversus abdominis' prime function to hold your guts in. So if you're after rippling abdominals, crunches are the way to go. If you're after a flatter abdominal area, you can't ignore the transversus abdominis.

The exercise is called the abdominal vacuum exercise. Sit up straight in a chair so that your thighs are at 90 degrees to your torso. Pull in your midsection as far as you can. Visualise the inside walls of your abdominals actually touching your spine. Hold for 30 seconds and slowly release. You should still breathe, albeit shallow during the exercise.

However, you shouldn't ignore the fact that you need to get rid of excess fat, especially around the midsection if you are to see any result of a muscle toning exercise. A good, sensible calorie controlled diet coupled with cardiovascular exercise can help you achieve this.

if you want to flaten ur stomach without doing any excercise then go for YOGA.
here's one excercise.
1. sit on a chair with straight back relax and then breath in out with force so that u have a jerking movement at ur upper stomach.start with 2-3 sets of 20-25 reps and increase slowly after every 2-3 weeks.
2. bend down on the floor in dog posture and breath in slowly and hold there for 7-10 secs. 2-3sets of 10-15 reps.
A very healthy & effective excercise. do it whenver u get time. most effective when u wake up in morning.

sit ups will not make your tummy flat.

holding in your tummy, or "flexing your abs" for long periods of time does give your abs a work out- however no amount of ab excercises will melt the fat on your stomach.

For that you need to eat right and have a proper excercise routine. Ab excercises will simply make your abs stronger, no more no less.

And you need to switch up the excercises that you do every 4-6 weeks too.

If you have stubborn belly fat, the only way you can reduce your fat is by doing aerobic exercises. During activities like swimming, rowing and walking, enough oxygen is supplied to the body to burn fat. Fat is burned from all over the body, including the stomach. If aerobic exercises are done regularly over a period of time, you will gradually lose weight. The healthiest way to prevent a fat stomach is by ensuring that your weight is normal for your height. Ensure that the energy provided by the food you eat matches the energy you burn performing your daily activities. Losing fat around the stomach takes time. Doing leg lifts in a pull-up bar station and swimming and biking will get you a flat stomach. Situps are more for your back so you don’t have back pains when you get old.

I've tried holding my tummy in before...
Trust me - not the way to go! You should buy one of those Ab Loungers to help. I use one right now, and it helps a bunch! It's like sit ups, but a whole lot easier - there's no hastle! So if you need somethin to get rid of extra fat, get an Ab Lounger!!! :-)
