Turkey Vultures are attracted to smells, usually of dead and/or rotting meat. If you don't see any obvious source of the smell (i.e. no random dead bodies in your yard), then you may want to check for a gas leak. The oil and natural gas companies pipe in the smell of rotting meat into their fuel specifically because turkey vultures will seek it out, thereby showing them where the leak is.

Either way, they're there for a reason, maybe someone is feeding them or there's constant roadkill nearby. Find the reason and take care of that.

BTW, I'm almost 100% positive that killing them is a federal offense (assuming you're in the US, that is).

Oh, and I would be careful trying to scare them away. One of their defense mechanisms is to projectile vomit. And it's disgusting. Think of what they eat, then mix it with bile, and then imagine them shooting it at you. Not pleasant :-)

Are they nesting in a nearby tree? If they are, go outside and bang some pans together, or something to make a loud noise. If you do this 2 or 3 times a day, at the same times every day, for about a week, they will leave. Otherwise, there must be a dead carcus somewhere! Get rid of it, and you get rid of the buzzards.

Feed them. They like road kill. Other dead animals will suffice.
