Yes, without a doubt, if it came down to a fight we would beat North Korea. That's why North Korea developed nuclear weapons in the first place. They realized that if the US ever got serious about wanting the North Korean government gone, there was really very little that they could do to stop us. North Korean military technology is mired back in the 1960's, and the US has become quite capable at eliminating numerically superior forces with its superior technology. (Iraq)

Possessing nuclear weapons means that the United States is much less likely to ever take it into its head to physically attack North Korea, but if we did, we would still win. We would take significantly more losses than before, because I don't think the North Korean government would hesitate to use their nuclear arsenal if attacked. But we would still win.

That being said, I think North Korea plans to leverage their weapons. North Korea will use its new capability to improve is bargaining position. The Korean government only seems irrational to us in the US. They are actually quite politically cunning. They are doing everything they can to increase their own influence, and recognize that actually USING their weapons would be suicide. Their weapons alter how we deal with North Korea, but don't present a physical risk. Only a diplomatic one.

North Korea has at most 3-4 nuclear weapons, not counting the one they just detonated. They do not have the ability to send them anywhere (such as a missile or aircraft).

As for beating them? Yes, it would be an easy victory. The people who have said it would be difficult are not doing their research. Frankly any number of nations could defeat the North Koreans. Germany, The UK, Russia, China, France, etc.

Do you know they still train their pilots with biplanes!

We have 4 carrier battle groups in the pacific, along with air wings in Hawaii and Japan (in addition to Korea). Combined that is several hundred aircraft that would render the North Korean air defence and fighter protection useless after a few days. Because the Western world "feeds" about 40% of North Korea, once their nation is blockaded and their transportation system is in shambles, the nation would rather quickly boil over and an invasion would not even be needed.

In October 1950, China entered the Korea war and kicked our butts. They dared us to drop the atomic bombs on them. They knew their population was so large that for us to be able to put a dent in it would have caused so much atomic energy to have been expended the world as we knew it would have ceased to exist. Well, they have even more people now; we would have a hard time using nukes on North Korea, as due to their proximity to South Koreas we would be killing an ally. The North Koreas rolled over the South in 1950 but would have a harder time this time but would prevail. Japan has a non-aggression Constitution but I believe they would have to come to the aid of the South. If not and the North wins and eventually rolling over Japan. I don't think American could stop them this time, too much political correctness plus bog brother China. No, North Korea would not be someone anyone should wake up!

No, only kids, literates and that bunch of professional losers believe that garbage of aggression. Have you ever wondered why China is everyone friend and why everyone in a political situation listens to them and takes their advise?

Given the technological battlefield superiority of the US Military there is not a conventional military force on earth we can't demolish at the present time. Korea, Russia, China, don't matter. Are we willing to put up with the casualties to get it done????? Head on conventional warfare we are hands down the tops, it's guerrilla warfare where the other guy doesn't come out and play by the rules and our tech edge loses a lot of value that's scary

What the answers dont realize is the fact that the U.S. is currently fighting two countries. A. Afghanistan--easily forgotten B. Iraq. Remember when you learned about the major downfall of germany was because they were fighting a war on both sides..Theoretically speaking- this could happen. Another thing that these people are so closed minded to realize (at least some of them) is the major ally of N.Korea is China. We are definitly no match against china at the moment,
Another thing is the U.S. doesnt want to hurt the people of N. Korea. The live in a communist state so they suffer enough already and its not like they can vote. Presumably we are suppose to be promoting democracy

not to mention the korean war so to answer your question, no we can no beat them at the moment

One country alone can mobilize its forces faster and efficiently better than any other; that country is the United States..(U.K. does an excellent job as well). Combined with S. Korean forces, and considering the fact that N. Korea's Nuclear program is in its infancy, I would say North Korea would be easily defeated.. There would be probably be a high number of defections as well, as many in the North are brutalized under Kim's regime..Also, I dont see this as a lone fight, I am sure that if it ever came to action; this would be a NATO campaign..

That being said, any war, battle, etc. with N. Korea, would be costly in lives, and money, before it would be all over. It would not be a "cakewalk".

If the U.S. had to go it alone.....

U.S.
Aircraft: 18,169
Armor: 29,920
Artillery Systems: 5,178
Missile Defense Systems: 35,324
Infantry Support Systems: 2,441
Naval Units: 1866
Merchant Marine Strength: 470

South Korea:
Aircraft: 1,481
Armor: 4,650
Artillery Systems: 5,528
Missile Defense Systems: 7,032
Infantry Support Systems: 13,000
Naval Units: 85
Merchant Marine Strength: 650

North Korea
Aircraft: 1,624
Armor: 6,560
Artillery Systems: 21,400
Missile Defense Systems: 16,075
Infantry Support Systems: 9,200
Naval Units: 708
Merchant Marine Strength: 284

Mark:
1. The U.S. has not utized its full military strength in Iraq nor Afghanistan, Political pressure keeps the numbers where they are today..
Available Military Manpower: 67,742,879
Total Military Personnel: 2,369,239
Active Frontline Personnel: 1,421,950
2. As stated, this would be a combined effort between the U.S. and S.Korea, More likely a NATO coalition...
3. You mention the Korean war in ignorance..The war was to protect the South from Invasion from the North. Mcarthur elevated the action well into North Korean territory until 270,000 Chinese PVA troops showed up as well as later Soviet combat advisors, aircraft pilots, and weapons and we were pushed south of the 38th parallel DMZ..Later regaining ground and settling at the DMZ. This is in spite of the fact that initially,
the post-World War II demobilization of U.S. and allied forces, which caused serious supply problems for American troops in the region (excluding the United States Marines, the infantry divisions sent to Korea were at 40% of paper strength, and the majority of their equipment was found to be useless).

the goal of the Korean war was to recapture all of what had been South Korea before an agreement was reached in order to avoid loss of any territory.
It was not a defeat.

Not easily no. This would make Iraq look like a cakewalk.

I am sure that other people here saying that the US could easily beat North Korea, probably thought the same about Iraq.

The US could not defeat North Korea in the 50's and North Korea has done nothing but beef up it's military since then, at the expense of it's populace.

The US could probably defeat North Korea, but it would require a general draft and a huge amount of sacrifice. You would be looking at about a million dead at least.

We could win but we would also lose. South Korea would be destroyed. as would about 100,000 of our troops stationed in Korea and japan. There is also the Chinese wild card they are obligated to come to North Korea's defense. If they did then we would lose the west coast and all our allies in the pacific as china is a full fledged nuclear power. These reasons and more are why I long ago decided to let them have nukes they will simply be added to our nuclear target list. PS I don't believe in this giving nukes to terrorist nonsense and neither should you it's political BS, nor is Kim Sung IL a crazy he is just doing what it takes to guarantee the security of his country and political system. Now he can negotiate from a position of strength.

Well in a air war yes. Ground War no. Yes it is scary. But remember, we know for a fact, that they do not have what it takes to launch it on a missile. Now it could be that it was not a nuke they tested. They could have done one of two things, beside really set one off. 1. They could have had a shitload of TNT and set it off so the scales would react and people would notice. Or it could have been a real earthquake, and they are just saying they set one off. Either way I would not worry about it. We will not be the first ones to invade N. Korea! Russia, S. Korea, and japan will attack them first!

In a war with them there would inevitably be a draft so our military personel would become greater. Not to mention our weapons and technology are 30 years ahead of anything thay have. Nuclear wise we have the biggest arsenal and our ally France has The Force de Frappe the second biggest and most advanced nuclear arsenal on the world. Of course nuclear war though would have horrible outcomes, I think kim johng-il wants to use nuclear weapons as more of a political leverage than anything, because he knows in a full-out war he would lose, espescially now that their biggest ally, China criticizes their quest to become a nuclear power.
