I need an honest description from a NYC resident. I am moving there on FEB. 07. I visited NYC for one week this past Feb. I liked it, but as a tourist. I am really nervous about moving there, it is extremly diferent from where I live. I am going with my husband to complete graduate studies. How is the day-to-day in NYC?

Living in NYC is the best. you can do anything any time you want. the subway will be your best friend. get a good subway map and learn it. cabs are OK but expensive. food is every place and ranges from very cheap to very very expensive. don't use the hand rails in public places, you don't know where they have been :P if you see a paper bag on the ground or anyplace else, leave it alone. IT DOES NOT HAVE MONEY IN IT! if you have a car now sell it before you move here. you don't need it. parking is very expensive and you will not use the car for months at a time. when you get here go site seeing at least one day a month. there is so much to see and before you know it you will be moving away and wish you have more time to see things you never saw.

hope that helps. good luck.

Unlike most (if not all?) of the people who have answered your question so far, I was born and raised in NYC and have lived here my entire life, in Queens to be specific. In a nutshell, NYC is a fast-paced metropolis. You can do almost anything you want, anytime you want, and find a way to get there. NYC is the city that never sleeps.

Most people who move to NYC are fascinated by living in Manhattan (if not dead-set on it). If this is the case for you, then expect to pay an exorbitant amount of money on rent for the tiniest space imaginable. Manhattan is an island which holds the majority of our 8 million residents -- you do the math. =)

If, however, you don't want to spend most (70-90%) of your money on rent by living in "central Manhattan" (as suggested by another post here), you can find a great apartment that is twice the size and a fraction of the price in any of the other 4 boros that comprise NYC. This will afford you the ability to live comfortably and still enjoy yourself with all the city has to offer.

TIP: Familiarize yourself with the vast subway system before you arrive. Believe me, it will be of great use to you while you are here. You can check out the MTA's website at: http://www.mta.info/

Certainly take the time to do a little more in-depth sight-seeing while you are living here. Be sure to include some of our many cultural attractions into your daily life. Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, take in an opera at Lincoln Center, walk around Central Park, visit the different eclectic neighborhoods of Manhattan, check out the Bronx Zoo, or watch a baseball game.

All in all, I love living in NYC and I doubt I would ever leave (but one never knows). I hope you enjoy your time here.

New York is a very fast-paced city. It is not the colorful, and beloved Manhattan, of the raucous '70s (the Ratso Riso/ Midnight Cowboy times), ah, those, oh so golden days, I miss 'em.

Manhattan is glittery, with a "pretty face," for tourists to "drop-off their money" here, before heading home. NYC lost it's personality, it's charm. NY is fast-paced, the streets and sidewalks are crowed, everyone rushing to "get somewhere." The population is about 8-million, on a tiny Island, yes, we're an island, believe it or not.

I don't ride the subway system, too many problems with it. I walk or ride the bus. Subway/Bus fare is: $2.00 one-way.

Yea, I dont know man, the people that have responded to you dont sound like they live in NYC. How is it to be here? Its expensive. I dont know where you re from but you wont live that here. thats all i can say. Will you like it? Depends on how well you can roll with it. If you re looking for a Mary Tyler Moore moment, I dont think so. If You re looking for an Edward Hooper kind of lifestyle, then Ok you ll be fine.

You need $$$ to live well in NYC. Choose a safe central neighbourhood, it will be worth the money. Don't live in Queens, Bronx or Brooklyn.
This way, you can always walk to places and can avoid the subway. Even if it means paying more rent, choose central Manhattan....it makes life so much more easy.
Life is wonderful in Manhattan but you must be realistic about money.....if you are very limited, use most of your money on rent, and limit yourselves with eating out....or NEVER eat out. Instead of movies or expensive theatre, just watch the passing parade on the streets, which is free.
My favourite area to live in NYC is Upper West Side, anywhere from 59th Street to 86th Street, from 8th Ave to Central Park West.
Your location is the clue to the kind of life you lead. The Upper West Side attracts artists, writers, actors, and is very slightly alternative and casual.
East Side is more buttoned-up and formal, but some find it "safer". In fact NYC is a very safe city, as long as you look as if you know where you're going, walk confidently and wear a shoulder bag over your chest!
I never saw any crime in NYC during 4 years of living there. I was also never out on the streets at 4 a.m.!
Greenwich Village is now overpriced and touristy, and SoHo has become a big shopping mall.
The arty part is now Chelsea, which is West 28th street around 6th and 8th Avenue....rents climbing there, too.
I am sure you could find housing around Lincoln Centre, perhaps just behind it, not too pricey and very central.
The clue is to live in your neighbourhood and not need to take many taxis or transport to get anywhere else, so it very much depends on where you will be studying.
America is a capitalist society....you can have whatever you want, if you can pay for it. You are judged (somewhat) by what you earn and spend. My tip is to use your money on RENT.....the rest will follow.
Good Luck!

Depends upon where you'll be working & where you'll be living. People don't "live" in New York City. They live in their neighborhood & they "work" in NYC. Manhattan is arguably the most interesting place to live on Earth. Every block is its own neighborhood.
