Be very careful; investigate as you would any stylist or salon operator. Generally people in beauty schools are there to learn and you can assume they don't know as much. They should be well supervised but ours wasn't. If you know the person who is doing the service and know people they have done successfully, it should be OK. It can take a long time for hair to grow out...and once it has been damaged, all you can do is wait (or go really short).
I saw a lot of disasters in school, one was a perm left on too long that melted (softened hair so much that it broke) the hair off at the scalp. Honest.
You can face the same dangers in a salon however. Not everyone who has a station in a salon is knowledgeable or sober (sorry to say), I always recommend asking people whose hair you admire who does their hair (not just the salon, the name of the stylist). I saw people who were great in school and some who never seemed to catch on. I've seen the same in salons (though the disaster level is generally greatly reduced).
Recently a woman who usually sees someone at our salon for Liscio straightener went to another salon to a new stylist, she was told, is a hot-shot in Beverly Hills*, he damaged her hair causing it to break off near the scalp. He blamed her colorist, saying she used the wrong color knowing the woman has straightening (not true, it has always been fine before), stylists I know from that salon told me they thought he was stoned, he seemed odd and "off".
So, it is important to know about the stylist (their track record)because paying more doesn't necessarily get you more.

* I kept asking, "If he is such a hot shot in Beverly Hills, why is he wasting his precious time driving to little modest Redondo Beach to do a straightening?" I guess now we know. When the facts don't work, there is a reason....

I never have, but if that were something I was looking to have done, I would give it a try. These folks practice on wigs first, so they have had some practice. I don't know the price difference, but I'm sure you can't beat the deal. Ask around... see if someone you know has gone to a beauty/tech school for their perm and see what they thought. Get the name of the student that did your friend's hair and go to them for more assurance.

i went to beauty school, and i would say yes.... but NO at the same time. do you know how damaging perms and relaxers are to your hair? i wouldn't recomend them for anyone.
as far as color goes, i would ask for a teacher to accompany the student during the consultation (so that they hear what you want) and the mixing process (so they can double check that the right products were mixed).
but if something does go wrong, you need to remember that the students are still learning, and that you paid the discounted price because of that. if you aren't the type to take chances, then go to a professional salon... they are faster, and experienced, and if they mess it up they will do whatever it takes to fix it!

no. I would rather have someone more experienced. I got a perm at a school and it took six hours when it should only take 2. And not to mention a few years back where jean juarez was sued because one of the student's burned all this woman's hair off..

I used to get relaxers all the time at Pittsburgh Beauty Academy in Pittsburgh, PA downtown. They were very careful and did a great job!

It was a good school, too. The whites, male and female, learned to do all types of hair. In salons all over that area, white and black hairstylists do all services for all types of people as a result.

Just a great outfit overall!

i would get color, haircut or styled but not a perm or relaxer which can be damaging if not done te right way.if you are wiling to take a chance go ahead. It is a lot cheaper than going to a professional.

If I knew the student or knew people who had gotten these services and were satisfied. The instructor can't be with every student at once and to much can go wrong. I have no patience for waiting for my hair to grow back.

Yes, teachers are there to supervise and help out. Trust me I was a student at a cosmo. school. You'll be fine and you can't beat the price.
