I just got married and got back from the honeymoon. I want to legally change my last name to his. How do I go about doing this in NJ? I've read about how to do it in other states but NJ is always difficult... anyone know?

You should recieve by mail an official copy of your marriage license with a raised seal on it. I think it takes about 6 weeks, so you just haven't received it yet. Once you get that, start with social security. Fill out the form: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf and either go to your local social security office or mail it to them with your marriage license.
When you get your new Social Security card, then you can change your Drivers license and then everything else. For the driver's license, you'll need the 6 points of ID to change the name. Make sure to bring the official copy of the marriage license and the new social security card along with the other required points of ID.
If you have a passport, that name change is done by mail. You have to send in your passport and marriage license. They'll send back the ammended passport.
It's good to have a couple copies of your official marriage license because you have to mail it out for some of these name changes. If you have several copies, you can always have one.

It should be the same as any other state. You start off by going to your nearest social security office. Bring your old social security card and your marriage license. They will process the name change on the same day. The new card will be mailed to your house. After you've received the new card, bring it to the DMV, so you can change the name on your driver's license and/or ID. Make sure you bring your marriage license in case they ask for it. After that, contact your human resource department and let them know about the new name, so they can change it on your paycheck and W-2 forms. Then, start calling your credit card companies and any other companies that has your name on it and let them know. Normally, they will ask you to fax them a copy of your marriage license to them.

Wait until your official notarized wedding license comes back in the mail to you (research wedding license requirements on your county's homepage) and take that to the nearest social security administrative office. Then use your new social security card to change your driver's license and other financial things. I talked to Wells Fargo today and all they need is the official wedding license to change your bank account name. Hope this helps!

You have to go by the social security office first and change your social security card... After you do that you have to go to the DMV and get your last name changed on your license...
OH! Yes they definately were supposed to give you that! I got my marriage license the day of my wedding... The preist is supposed to fill it out after the ceremony...
Actually.. I had to pick a blank copy up at the Courthouse, then keep it til the wedding...
Oh geeh!!! I hope your marriage is legal...
Best of luck! ♥

All you have to do is notify the DMV. You will probably have to fill out a form with a copy of your marriage certificate. Same with Social Security. No big.

That should be good anuff but call up your registry{thats were their send you to change licience,i.d.Ask if your copy will be good anuff,if not call person that married you and ask to send you the real one!you may have to go to city hall if you got married by J.P.,call city hall and they will tell you how much it cost, and they do charge you at registry also! Now if you have created cards, you may be able to change each one over phone, but they may ask you to send copy of marrige lichense, make plenty of copys up,Also if you have to get licence at city hall,do not wait for them to send,it takes forever,Your better off going up yourself!Hollywoodp.s.Good Luck,And Congratulations!

To save your sanity- go to theknot.com and buy the name changing kit. It has all the info and forms in it for you so you can fill all the stuff out at home and figure off where you have to go.
It also has good advice and reminder in it- I forgot you have to change all your medical cards and insurance stuff too!! So they have all the forms and reminder in one box.
