Sgt. Charles Jason Jones died in Iraq on September 20.
The members of Westboro Baptist church of Topeka,Kansas stood outside the funeral home where services for Sgt. Jones were being held and hoisted signs & yelled "Thank God for 9/11" and "Thank God for dead soldiers."
They hate everyone--Jews,blacks,gays,Catholics,you name it.Their official website is http://www.godhatesfags.com
Like I stated above,if I were a Baptist,I'd fervently fight them using the denomination's name.

I'm not trying to 'give them publicity'.I'm trying to raise awareness of this evil, and what they portray themselves as--they should NOT call themselves a Baptist Church!!

They are not a member of any mainstream Baptist group. There are only about 80 of them in their church, and most of those are family members. They are not allowed to date or marry outside of the church, so go figure ... inbreeding.
They picket at ALL funerals of Iraq soldiers who died in battle, saying that God is punishing America by killing American troops -- because they hate gay people.
If you think that is bad, they also planned to picket at the funerals of the five Amish girls this week (but cancelled the plans). Their signs were going to say, "Your daughters are in hell". Imagine. Those poor families, having to be taunted and tormented by these delusional half-wits who clearly have NOTHING to do with God!
But they get away with it, all because of freedom of speech, and the abysmal lack of laws against hatred.
Here is a Youtube video about the Westboro Church and the Amish girls' funeral. Their plans to picket the funeral were cancelled.

When I was in middle school, I can't remember what started the conversation, but my Baptist friend told me that she believed everyone was going to heaven except for the Jews since they killed Jesus (although, I think technically the Romans killed Jesus, if I'm not mistaken. The Jewish priests just forced their hand with the timing). I was somewhat appalled by the statement having grown up in a far less judgmental denomination, so I responded to her with the following statement: "Jesus was a Jew. So, if you've just condemned your savior to hell, where does that put you?" She never talked to me again. She wasn't that great of a friend anyway that I feel the loss...

I am Baptist myself. I don't agree with that church's political views. However, if it calls itself a Baptist church then I guess it is one in doctrinal beliefs. This does not constitute picketing and disrupting funeral services of fallen soldiers..
I can agree with their message of thank God for dead soldiers but I also thank God for the live ones also still fighting in battles in foreign countries.
If the media just would not report such activity that would calm down. Also I see that it is only one Baptist church doing that. Just think what would happen if all Baptist churches banned together and did something like that.
I guess we can thank God for 9/11 because it gave our nation a wake up call.

Baptists are not organized by a hierarchical structure like Presbyterians or Episcopalians. Thus the WBC can call itself whatever it likes and teach whatever it likes without falling under disciplinary procedures. Groups like the Souther Baptist Convention are entirely voluntary and those who participate send deligates from each church. There is no requirement or system of authority or accountability.

"Hypotheticals ("If I were Baptist...")" don't make the point. If *I* were Muslim, I'd feel justified in a suicide bombing.
We non-religious people are appalled by many faces of religion. We don't see much difference between them and others. Maybe the Westborough Baptists are just a glimpse into the evolution of Christianity. Hmmm.
Edit: "Bro ken12": Excuse me while I puke at your last sentence. It infuriates me that religious people want to call every tragedy "the work of the Lord." There is no God to "thank" for 9/11! Sick humans did it -- in the name of "God," ironically. Maybe YOU should have been flying one of the planes since you were so interested in blessing us with a "wake-up call."

#1. They are NOT Baptists.
#2. Most of the members are of one family.
#3. QUIT GIVING THEM ANY PUBLICITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They will wither and move on if the camera's stop rolling.
They came to our town and picketed our Churches (yes even the Baptist one) but left early when no TV cameras showed up.
Peace!
Peace, and God Bless.

I agree with you. Baptists should be and are upset. But it is the media that is giving them a forum and fame. If they did not get free TV coverage every time they did that, they would stop

mmm...Maybe what's missing on BOTH aspects is HISTORY which so much american citizens HATE, American Jews and Americans interval. good allow us to start. First Messianic Judaism is a trendy Movement, they consider that they're jews, since of Torah now not since of a designated creed, The Torah states that there's the equal legislation for the stranger residing amongst you and for you.you could ask yourself wherein does it states this, start by way of READING the torah, and give up going to the Temple for simply household Heritage. As you start to learn Torah you'll become aware of that people who find themselves non-jew and desire to realize Torah fall below the equal bracet, in Torah. This is why they name themselves "JEWS" despite the fact that I can comprehend the confusion in a trendy feel, however if you happen to READ TORAH as you profess you do, you'll absolutely see this. Another rationale there's a divison amongst Judaism and christianity is it is PAST historical past, first, trendy AMERICAN CHRISTIANITY isn't Catholic Christianity, that is the rationale of alot of agony and resentment amongst christains. THERE is ALOT of honest chrsitians who're discovering there JEWISH ROOTS, JESUS used to be a jewish Rabbi, since of his skills in Torah he used to be identified as a RABBI,in his time. He used to be regected for pointing out to be the son of G-D, within the e-book of Acts of the NEW TESTAMENT, if you'll learn the e-book ,a designated cornilius-a non jew used to be a worshipper of G-d, which means that he train judiasm, now via-out the historical past of the jews Rabbi's created the culture of the elders which recognize is known as the Talmud, those culture precipitated a department some of the jews and non-jew torah observant. JESUS in step with the brand new tesatment writings got here to wreck-down the wall of divison some of the jews and non-jewish Torah observant and that is the True message of the NEW TESTAMENT writings.NOW, since the Catholic church took the writings and made there faith upon them, people who donot study consider that christianity is a off-shoot of judaism, while truthfully this is a sect of judasim, at the start known as nazarenes. Torah observant non-jews in step with Torah after finishing the requisites of the LAW can also be viewed JEWS, so while there may be such a lot hostility towards those sect, please hold in brain that they don't seem to be the catholic faith. They are truthfully a unrecognized sect of judiasm. Hope this used to be useful and forgive any uncorrect spelling I used to be velocity typing. Shalom in HASHEM. santi

I think people don't counter them that much because they are so clearly...well, the only word is insane. They are truly warped zealots. There's no reasoning with such people. Much like "islamic" zealots. zealotry has little to do with actual faith. countering the westboro looney-tunes only serves to acknowledge them, and give them more publicity.
