they don;t even bring in enough money to pay their apportionments. Is this done regularly? I have been to that church many times even though I am an atheist, and see nothing wrong with it. At least nothing that a few coats of paint couldn't fix. What are they thinking?

I am familiar with church finances because everyone in my family attends that church, and although I am an atheist I am open minded and discuss issues with the family. I am not stupid, nor do I beleive I will catch fire if i step foot in a church, its a building with people who talk in it. I can visit as much as I want and still call myself an atheist. I know intimately the details of this renovation, because my father in law is on the board that disagrees with it. We actually talk in my family.

I agree, near by my house is a multi-million dollar Pentecostal church which includes a store in it, yes a store. I think that it is totally wrong and I don't understand, they seem to be going against everything the bible says about what the church is supposed to be.

Our church is going through a renovation, but it's nothing close to being in the millions of dollars.
A friend of mine, however, attends a church that has a contract on a new property that is very expensive. Many of the church members didn't think it was a wise idea to spend the church's money that way, because the existing church was just fine, and many of them left the church because of it. This has put the church in a bind, because the funding was supposed to come from the members, and most of them left. Now the church is in a contract, and they're screwed.
The moral of the story: God tells us to be good stewards with our money. If the church can't even do that, it could result in a huge mess.

I can't provide data showing that this is typical, but perhaps the church administrators are hoping that a face-lift will help boost attendance by making the setting more appealing and able to hold more people. They're most likely gambling that more people in the pews will equal more funds in the collection plate to help pay the bills.

the church gets a renovation to bring in more people. people are not attracted to a church that is falling apart at its foundation.
I know you r atheist and i don't want to make it sound bad, but think of a church building as a business, the more people brought in the easier it will be to pay for the renovation. many churches do this to get more attention from worshipers... it is a thought to make any holy building at of a presntable state

They are thinking that they will be able to attract a larger crowd if they looked newer and better. How is it than an atheist would be faniliar with the church finances? Are you there finacial planner, if not those decisions are best left to the board and congregation.

The money they are spending could probably be better spent, yet man is after looks and money. We live in a materialistic time when all we want is to spend. That money could better be used to help out the people of your community. It's not like the place is falling apart, is it?

Congregations can be very strange that way. Ours just discovered that our bell tower is in very bad shape. From the announcement to the meeting to approve the expenditure - they raised $69K, in like 10 days. Yet our "regular" giving is $40k behind budget for the year. People want to know that what they are giving is going to something specific that they can see. Postage, paper and payroll aren't specific enough.

I think that what they are thinking is to scam all the church members out of as much money as they can, using the excuse that they need it renovate the church. As for your daughter, watch her carefully that she does not give away all her money to this church.

well... my view is that those multi million dollars would be better spent.... on people who are dying of hunger..... that would be more of God's work.... or Jesus' work ........... what will God do with money ( a human concept)... or beauty of a church? is God impressed by such trivial creations in comparison to the universe..... ? hehe.... i am a beleiver .... and i think you are totally right.... you have a better understanding of God ( your own conscience) than the people who are spending the multi million dollars.....

After a while a church grows so big that they need to expand and that costs money.
