I read this book for my English class and I cant remember the name. But, I do remember that at the end of the book the boy either died or was in the process of dying because the milk he drank had "turned." Since the setting of the book was in the Old West I guess they didnt have the machines and stuff like we do today. I guess my questions are #1. What does it mean when milk turns? #2. Can drinking milk directly from a cow kill you or cause serious damage? #3. If this is the case, what are the harmful effects of spoiled milk on the body when you drink it? What do you need to do when you drink the milk? Is there a medicine you can take or what?

1. When raw milk is left standing for a while, it turns sour. This is the result of fermentation: lactic acid bacteria turning the milk sugar into lactic acid. This fermentation process is exploited in the production of various dairy products such as cheese and yogurt. There are four noted periods of milk decay:

* Rancid (also called "on the turn". Milk is still consumable at this stage)
* Curdling (separation of curd and whey will occur but may still be consumable)
* Coagulation (beyond use. A period of aromatic decay sets in accompanied by mould)
* Dry (beyond use. The milk has dehydrated and become hard and chalky)

2. You can drink raw milk given that it doesn't turn sour as mentioned above, but it's not recommended as there is a chance of harmful bacteria.

3. Unpasteurized milk CAN harbor harmful disease-causing bacteria such as tuberculosis, salmonella, diphtheria, polio, and escherichia coli.

The expression "milk turning" just simply means the milk is spoiled. If milk spoils in the refrigerator there are no harmful side effects to drinking it. Cottage cheese is essentially processed spoiled milk. Drinking milk directly from a cow will not kill you. It doesn't taste very good but not deadly. Milk is only harmful to your body when it spoils outside of the refrigerator. Just like anything else that's left out to spoil it gets infested with bacteria.

The only danger of drinking milk directly from a cow , is the danger of UNPASTEURISED milk,

This can pass on salmonella or the tuberculosis bacteria,

This is a risk for the person that, drinks milk directly from a cow . without it being pasteurised or boiled

when milk "turns "
the curd ( solid part of the milk separates from the whey )
this is how yogurt is made and curd cheese
and eventually all sorts of cheeses .
The liquid (WHEY) is also said ,to be very good for you.
Milk the t has turned ,smells sour
This stage is not harmful to us .

milk goes bad ( beyond sour )
smells VILE
and tastes disgusting

This could upset your stomach . as it is the ideal medium for growing bacteria .

i have never heard of milk poisoning anyone

.
Always check your milk is fresh , and pasteurised
( check the use- by label)
store it in a clean container in the fridge

If you get milk straight from the cow, boil it before you drink it .

1. when it "turns" it means it has spoiled or gone bad.
2. no, drinking milk straight from the cow will not hurt you, it's jut very different from what you get at the store (warm for 1)
3. If the milk is bad, it will taste horrible and may make you sick to your stomach but there are really no long term effects. (unless you keep drinking spoiled milk). I hope this answers all your questions.

usually spoiled milk will come back up immediately (vomit) but as a little girl i lived by a dairy farm and they would drink the milk directly from the cow. milk in the raw state before pasteurization can be very dangerous especially for little kids and the elderly or those will weakened immune systems. raw milk can carry salmonella, e-coli and various other parasites or viruses...its always best to drink pasteurized or goats milk...for some reason goats milk is better on the stomach and doesn't carry as many harmful things in it...although it does taste a little different.
