I agree with you. It would make sense to me if peoples of North, Central and South America were thought of as "americans".

As a the American continent consists of a division of many countries and also continentwise devided as North America and South America.Since the rest of the countries have allowed or the USA is affluent to use the name" AMERICA",there you find a country called America.Citizenships catagarised basically on a country but not on a continent. So the USA deserves it.

But America is not the only country on the continent of North America. Canada is on the same continent but is a different country. I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question but if you are not born in American or to legal American citizens I don't think you can call yourself American.

I know Americans who were born in other countries because their parents were visiting relatives. How are they not American? They live in America, and have parents who are American, yet you don't consider them American because they were not born in a specific place? Sorry but America isn't a continent, North America is.

The Spanish originally tried to reach India going West. It took a long time for geographers to know that it was another continent. That was Americo Vespuccio and the continent was named after him. Spaniards still refer to the newe territories as "the Indies" and subsequently named the natives as "Indians".
When the USA become independent from England they called themselves Americans as opposite to Europeans.
The politically correct name to the citizens from the USA is North-Americans. However, I have Mexican friends that are offended if referred to as South-Americans as geographically they are North, same as USA citizens and Canadians.
Polemics will follow!

Exactly. People from Central and South America (and Canada to boot) should have the right to call themselves "american," since they are part of the Americas. I find that often, people who use the term "American" to apply exclusively to the US, often have some chauvinistic or discriminatory attitude to preach. By thinking of all the other Americans, we are not only being more inclusive, but less likely to be bigoted.
Great question!

Well, the U.S.A is the only country that actually has the word "America" in it's name.
People from Mexico are Mexicans
People from Columbia are Colombian
So it stands to reason that people from the United States of America are called Americans.

I think it's easiest. Calling us United Statesians is kind of awkward. And the other countries in the two continents all have a name that is more specific so there isn't confusion. If we switch to calling all the countries "American" we'll be forever asking ourselves do you mean "US" or "American" as in North American? I think it would slow communication. (Kind of like my answers, haha)

I dont know, I guess the only reason why everyone is an american is b/c america dont really belong to any particular group or culture. Like China or Europe. Ur European if ur born there and if ur not , then ur not, but here its not really an issue.
