I believe most people who put down God do so out of being forced to attend church as a child, or having religious beliefs shoved down their throat. Not all Christians are loving, and some of your most outspoken Christians are annoying, hateful people. It's sad that people judge the entire group on a few bad apples... I liken it to denouncing the entire religion of Islam as evil because of a few terrorists. There are some truly wonderful Christians out there that I have the utmost respect for, even though I am not a believer.

EDIT: Oh yeah... forgot to mention the whole "concept" of evil... many atheists and agnostics find the idea of a loving, all-power God who allows evil in the world to be disgusting. They feel such a God is actually cruel. I can somewhat understand this viewpoint, but I don't put much stock in it. They also find the concept of a God who would sentence those who chose not to believe to never-ending torment unethical... and it really does sound like a dictatorship to me.

Because people don't understand why God would allow certain things from happening. For example:

9/11
rape
murder
AIDS
abortion
war
poverty
ebonics
and here's one, why would he allow a child to be harmed in any way.

Which god do you speak of? I do not put down my god, for my god is the sun.

People aren't accepting the idea of a god(s) and then putting it down.

People are putting down the moronic idea of running your life by a fairytale!

Depends which 'GOD' you're talking about!!

But the Human Spirit is Naturally Disobedient and Questioning!
Therefore Questioning and disobeying their Maker!
Not Good For a Healthy Happy Spiritual Life with Your maker!

So much? Well, I guess it's because there are A LOT of people out there who think there are no gods!

A lot of people are angry with God because of circumstances in their lives. And, a lot of people are just fools.
"Fools make a mock at sin..." Proverbs 14:9
Most of the time, however; it seems easier to blame God than to take responsibility and make things better.
I am glad others answered the question in 'their' way. It clearly shows the truth of the proverb.

Hey Sister, Am a christian just like you, and i agree totally with what your saying! I guess people do it, because they find it so hard to believe that, there is someone so big out there, who has the greatest love to give up his son like that, to die for them. That he made everything, and has the power to do anything. But also then again..these people are the ones who have allowed satan to make them stubborn...Sad i know...but true...

Because stupid believers tell us that God sits up in Heaven dealing out misfortune to people on earth according to His "mysterious ways."

Because stupid believers tell us that God will torment us in fire forever because we can't bring ourselves to believe in someone for whose existence we see no evidence whatsoever.

Because stupid believers tell us to accept every word in a 2000-year-old compilation of Semitic mythology, even if our senses and our reason tell us otherwise.

Etc. You get the idea. God is not the problem. Your stupid ideas about God that you force on the world by fear and violence -- those are the problem.

Because people are always afraid of the unknown. And that particular unknown is worthy of fear, therefore, people will belittle Him to make Him seem somewhat diminished.
