You need to file a new W2 form to change your withholding. Was your previous filing '0' or 'exempt'? Exempt means they are taking no taxes out except social security. '0' means they are taking out the absolute max that they can, this is the highest deduction level.

You do not have to change your status to claim your child as a deduction at year end. If you are filed exempt, you don't need to change it at all (they are not taking anything out). If you are filed '0' you should get a decent refund depending on how much you make to start. The only problem with this is that you then have to claim that refund money as Income on your tax forms next year (ridiculous eh). If you never have them take it out, it is not 'refunded' and so does not have to be claimed as income next year.

You have to change your exemptions with human resources, it just doesn't automatically change. It all depends on how much you make if you want to change them. Sometimes claiming single and 0 is the best.

You don't have to change your exemptions, you might get a bigger refund if you don't change it and yes you can still claim your kid on your tax return either way.

you need to change your tax forms with Human Resources. But if you don't you'll just get more money when you do your 2006 taxes. that's always a plus...
