You may find this hard to believe, Slightly open your mouth and breathe very slowly through it while you concentrate on the next expected hiccup. The key word is concentrate! It's like you are waiting for it, so you can really get into it. While you do this...stare into space, as you want nothing to interfere with this process. You may hiccup a few more times and if you do take a deep breath and start again. The key is to let your mind go blank and just wait for the next spasm. I know people that have had the hiccups for days and it has worked for them. Good luck.

best i have seen is don't drink alcohol... and if you get hiccups either ignore them... (the relaxing of the muscles) or if you've drank something or ate something and you're usually intolerant to milk or something else just take a spoonful of sugar.

some lay down... or sit upright straight and breath normally..

drinking a glass of water... to holding their breath.

if you smoke.. and get the hiccups don't smoke... just breath normally or a little slower than normal and sit upright or lay down with your back flat. this process helps you relax your muscles and sooner or later (normal average of pretty persistant hiccups is 4 to 8 minutes) they'll subside.

another thing is don't get excited or scared that they won't go away i've seen that fear cause even worse hiccups.

if you've drank alcohol and get them.. just do the usual and get a glass of water.

some enjoy a small glass of fizzy coke to sip it and belch... then the trapped gases in your stomach exhaust themselves and that will calm the hiccups.

there's many remedies and causes.

big deal is to calm and breathe normally...

most times hiccups are caused by stress and lack of proper air inhalation.

sometimes growth spurts can cause frequent hiccups.. just relaxing helps majorily.

if it's a disease and the hiccups are very persistant and run for longer periods of time than the suggested norm... seek your doctor and have them look you over.

and sometimes a nose, throat specialist and an gastrological/gastrointestinal specialist may be able to tap into what's causing more aggressive hiccuping.

You gotta believe me on this one....I know everyone says they have 'the' cure for hiccups, but I DO. I suffer (suffered!) from them badly on and off all my life. I have found THE CURE. I is very simple....

All you do is drink some vinegar. Any type will do; I have used malt, white wine and raspberry and they all work. When you get hiccups, drink a good slug of vinegar straight from the bottle. It has worked, for me, 100% OF THE TIME.

In fact the reason I searched for 'hiccups' on Yahoo Answers is because I got hiccups just now - they lasted for four minutes until I took a long drink of white wine vingar. I ceased hiccuping as soon as I drink it.

I now even carry little sachets of vinegar in my handbag - ust in case I get hiccups! Try it and be amazed!!!

Hiccups is mostly caused by too mush oxygen and too little CO2 in the lungs. This sends the diaphragm into spasms. Hence the hiccups. Try holding your breath for 30 seconds. If you hiccup during this time, exhale and start again. (It works for me anyway)

There are two methods that I recommend:

drink water from the opposite side of the glass. That is to say, hold the glass in front of you, as you would normally do but, rather than placing your mouth along the side of the glass closest to you, place your mouth the on the other side of the rim. Bend at the waist and drink as much water as you can. Don't ask me about the logic behind this...I heard about it 15 years ago and it works for me still...

Then, there's the teaspoon of sugar method which also works well for most....unless you happen to be a diabetic. Or very far away from the sugar bowl...

This sounds kinda crazy, but it almost always works for me. Have someone hold their hands over your ears while you drink as many gulps as you can without taking a breath. If you're alone, you can do the same thing by using a straw to drink. You can even do this with a baby by holding their ears while they drink their bottle. The only time it hasn't worked for me, is right after surgery, my husband had really hard hiccups. Hope it works for you, I have made believers out of many skeptics using this method.

When I get hiccoughs I hold my breath and swallow three times. It usually works. It if doesn't for you get about half a pint of coke/pepsi/whatever (room temperature) and gulp it down in one go as fast as you can. When the burp(s) come(s), let it all out - don't hold back.

Hold your breath for 10 minutes or so, I guarantee you will never be bothered by hiccups again.

A sharp shock is supposed to work. The wife had them the other night when we were in bed and as she turned over I entered her from behind without warning. That shocked her and cured her hiccups.
