Apart from earning the right to vote in Dutch elections (and, conversely, losing the right to vote in British ones), there is nothing to be gained by having a Dutch passport over a British one. As an EU national you are entitled to live and work in any EU country you like. The Dutch passport does not, however, give you as many of the travel advantages you currently enjoy with your British one (their is no Dutch equivalent of the British Commonwealth, you see).

You can no longer have dual nationality. If you wish to become Dutch (and I'm presuming you actually live in Holland), then contact the local immigration office and check you are eligible. The number of years you have left on your passport is completely of no importance, as you will have to give it up immediately upon becoming a Dutch citizen. Though if you don't do it in the next 2 years, you will have to get a new one or be deported. Without a passport you become an illegal immigrant.

If you are British born then I think your kids may have the option of seeking UK Nationality anyway. But why do you want to burn your bridges with Britain? Unless you are sure you're finished with the country, why not just apply for Dutch citizenship and keep your British?

You can only renounce your UK citizenship by making a formal declaration to that effect in front of an authorised official, and the UK government has no problem with you acquiring citizenship elsewhere - should you choose at a later date to reapply for a UK passport after acquiring Dutch citizenship, you can do so without any problems.

Your children will also be able to claim UK citizenship, regardless of whether or not you go on to renounce your own UK citizenship, as you were a UK citizen at the time of their birth.

Your passport is not the key to your citizenship...if you wish to be a dutch citizen, then you will have to do that through the immigration system, if you wish not to be british, you will need to revoke your citzenship through the Home Office. Your children may choose to become British citizen later by virtue of you being British, if they choose, but being in the EU makes it a bit of a moot point.

Whether your passport is valid or not you are still a British Citizen. If you choose not to renew your passport that is up to you.
Also as a British Citizen your children automatically have the right to claim citizenship if you or they so wish.
