I guess I wasn't specific enough. A friend of mine is back from Iraq. He has been back a week but has not been able to call, email or IM. I was wondering if this is the normal procedure?

You usually have to conduct what we call "recovery" operations. You re-stock your arms rooms, clean your equipment. Run tests on vehicles and computer systems to make sure they still work after they arrive. For my unit is was only 4 days, but some people have taken a couple weeks, especially if there are problems with equipment functioning after the journey (especially true with radars).

Don't worry, he should be getting a nice dose of block leave, 2 weeks to 30 days of vacation. You'll get plenty of face time then.

Yes, it's normal.
Immediately after redeployment, there is a reintegration period of about seven days for most posts. Afterwards, they are then entitled to between 14 and 30 days leave.
Usually the first seven days after redeployment are really busy.
