I talk to my 2 cats every day. sometimes I believe that they actually understand what I'm saying to them because they just stare straight at me like they're listening. I've also realized that the more I speak to my cats the more vocal they are toward me. my kitties meow when I speak to them. like, if I say to my 7 mth. old male: "hey T.J, what are you doing?" he looks up at me and moews about three or four times as if it to say "what's it look like I'm doing, I'm sleeping"! also, everytime I play fetch with my 2 yr. old female I say: "Blackie, you want your mouse girl"? she stares up at me and meows at me constantly as if she telling me "Yes, I want it, quite dangling it in my face and throw it"! I actually think that cats understand a great portion of what we say to them. whether they care to inform us that they know or not. cats are very intelligent creatures and I believe that a small part has to do with the amount that people chat with them each day. they're my babies.

Doesn't everyone talk to their cats? LOL
My favorite thing that one of mine does . . .
We bought a new house last December -- so, 10 months ago! My youngest kitty, though, still gets lost. She will walk through the house meowing her question (her voice goes up at the end like a question), and I can just hear her thinking, "Where are you?" So, I answer her, "I'm over here." Then, she comes running into the room.
Also, every time I have to say the big "NO!" to my male, he curses at me! He'll twitch his whiskers and look at me from the corner of his eye and meow this weird cackling meow. I imagine he's saying, "I'll get up on that bleepity-bleep counter if I want to!" Even non-cat visitors understand that he's telling me off! He's really sweet, too, though. He's my only kitty that sleeps in our bedroom. He comes running to the door when I come home. I walk in and say, "Hey, there, Buddy!" And he meows hello to me and rubs on my legs. I give my cats the occassional treat of a little fish -- just a little. I will ask them if they want some fish, and they meow "Yes!!! Oh, yes, please!!!"
LOL

oh yes, and I believe they understand me too.
I have a big white tom cat that used to stay inside all the time and my mom and I heard him one day walking around the house saying..."oh nooo"..ok I thought nahhh he is just making odd boy cat sounds...he was doing this often though...so one day he was in the house and my mom and I were watching the news and there was a story on that made us both say "oh noo" at the same time..and right as soon as we did it the cat looked up at me and said "oh noooo" just like we did. My brother thought it was crazy, but he and his wife were here one day and I said oh no to my cat and he said it too....they freaked out....LOL
so yes..I think cats can understand us and I do talk to them as if there were people all the time...and even if they don't understand me I will still do it...because I love them and want them to know it.:)

I talk all the time to my cat. If I'm on the phone he thinks I'm talking to him and jumps in my lap and starts talking back. He just doesn't get the whole phone thing.
I think he likes to let me & my husband know what he's doing. LIke if he's in the hallway and we're in the living room we'll hear little meows from him every minute or so. We check on him to see if he's ok, but I think he's just talking like "Hey, I'm gonna catch this bug. Ok, I got it."

I have two little boys, but I give my Kitty Gracie just as much love. I treat her like she is my baby, I tell my boys, be nice to your little sister! I talk to her constantly, just like I do my children. I buy her toys when the other guys get toys. She brings me so much joy, just like my children do. She talks to me and comes when I call her name. She follows me around and gets into trouble, just like my little ones do. I never thought it possible to love an animal as much as I do Gracie. I brought her home when she was just 1 pound and 6 weeks old. She is a Himalayan kitten and has beautiful big blue eyes, I had to train her how to used her litter box and I had to bathe her when she soiled herself. I have to still help her onto the couches. She's my little sweetheart!

So I am with you on having unconditional love for my Kitty!

My 2 babies do that too. When I call their names, they'll run over to my feet and mew, as if saying, "Yes Mummy?" And when I scold them for doing something wrong, like using the couch as a scratching post, they give me a long lustful mew, as if saying, "I'm sorry." They grumble a lot too. Low mews (almost like growls) when I hide their toys. Cats are really wonderful creatures.

I love to talk to my cats. They listen better than my husband does sometimes. Cats are great at reading human emotion and know when their human friends need some attention or need to be left alone. I love my furry friends.
