I really wouldn't consider this a propaganda ploy by the FDA. The last E. Coli found in spinach was linked to three deaths and nearly 200 illnesses nationwide. Also, there has been 20 E. coli outbreaks from lettuce and spinach since 1995 involving the Salinas Valley. Eighteen were linked to lettuce and two to spinach. It is imparative that they get to the bottom of this - and discover the problem. I love to eat salad - but for now it may be better to eat cooked leafy greens.

I agree with your safety concerns. During this latest outbreak, a doctor said on the national news that boiling and soaking in chlorine would not make an e coli contaminated veggie fit to eat. So I don't think "just buy reputable and cook to proper temperature" is any answer. For the moment, we have been put in a position where more artificial seems better, which is unfortunate.
Processed and canned veggies have become an attractive option. Don't rule them out. Processed, though they be, they are still the bounty of nature and glorious veggies.

The only problem is even with proper cooking, it's hard to kill E.coli. Plus, my salads have gone out the window for now. I'm not cooking my salad!
As of this morning's news, they've traced it to a contaminated water supply. I still think it has to do with the workers pooping in the fields and wiping with their hands, because they aren't provided with the facilities to do it the right way.

Wash your own fruit and vegetables well. I think the main problem is people have become lazy and like food prepackaged and ready to eat. Do it yourself and avoid any question of how it was handled. Keep eating organic!
You can not count on the other person to wash his or her hands when handling your food. Far to many people use the washroom and never wash their hands. They then go on to contaminate everything they touch. Protect yourself when it comes to what you and your family's eat. It all comes down to cleanliness. It has nothing to do with organic or not.

It's still possible to eat Healthy. Individuals preparing food are the final defense from food borne illnesses. That is why it is so important to wash our foods thoroughly, cook to safe temperatures, and when possible buy from reputable growers. As this is not always possible when we are dining out or shopping in supermarkets. It is possible to take steps to protect ourselves which includes washing reasy to east prepackaged items such as Spinach.
