I have worked with criminals for many years, and honestly there are no two alike. Most of the time it is just having lived a very hard existence from early childhood on that leads most criminals to the life they have. They don't have the mental tools to make sound choices, they are most likely addicted to drugs and or alcohol, they are likely victims of crime and abuse themselves, the list goes on. When a person is raised in those circumstances it's not hard for them to cross the line of what is moral and what is not. I think a persons conscience ability to determine between right and wrong is innate, but if it is constantly being subjected to negativity it will eventually just deflate and the alpha gene will just take over... fight or flight if you will. You asked about murder.... most murders are committed by someone the victim knew... and are considered a crime of passion, which is totally different from stanger to stranger murder. There are several books written by a criminal profiler by the name of Dayle Heneman, I think you would find her work fascinating, give it a try.

It is usually a combination of genes and environment. Nurture and Nature. I believe that a person's genes may leave them predisposed to suffer from any certain type of disorder, disease, or behavior. When the environment takes it's affect also, (child abuse, neglect) the problem flares up the genetic predisposition into affect.
Not all of the time though. However, most serial killers, and many other criminals tend to have suffered from ODD and ADHD as young children. They were difficult to deal with, often violent, and self-absorbed with their own feelings or lack there of. Most serial killers are diagnoses with Anti-social personality disorder, a mental disorder that leaves its suffer with no concept of guilt, compassion, or remorse for anyone else.
When brains scans are done on many or even most of these people, they are found to have inadequate activity in certain regions of the brain, primarily the ones responsible for self-restraint and impulse control.

Well, when it comes to murder, there are different reasons why people will do it. It can be an illness like severe bipolar that drives them insane enough to kill. It can be a self defense reason, it can be the ppl they are hanging around with, and it can be the way you were raised, like neglect, or sexual abuse from a parent or relative.
Many things can make a person crazy enough to kill. Out of control anger is a big reason why they do it.

I'd say it's nurture over nature with this one. People who grow up in violent environments get more used to it & can then be more inclined to see that this is the way to solve problems.

no one is born good but he/she doesn't have the genes just a trigger like something that sets them off to that level of intensity and that can cause him to murder.
