I'm from California. I entered this question a few weeks ago complaning about all the chattalk the American teens use in stating their questions, and answers. I had the occasion to log onto this website in the wee hours, and found the UK kids dominating the site. The questions were the same like "How do I know he likes me?", "Will she call back?", and "How do I tell my parents I'm in love?". And all the questions had proper punctuation, good grammar, and correct spelling. So lots of kudos to our cousins across the pond, and thumbs down to the American kids who are too lazy to use proper English. u no wht i mean?

Interesting observation. I had assumed that the driver behind the shortening of words was because of so much SMS-ing on mobile phones but given that text messaging is so prevalent in the UK and they can still type correctly, we can't use this as an excuse. While it might be considered cool today, it doesn't fly in the business world in either country. Thanks for the comments. While I can't control how my own child writes, I do refuse to respond to poorly written notes from her until she writes it in real English (except on text messages). Maybe others could consider doing the same?

Thank you! Some sane person who actually gets irritated when me can't speak with proper grammar!

I understand if it is used in order to save money, like in a text message or something of the sort, but otherwise people are just lazy. And then they come across as uneducated and then they fit perfectly into the stereotype of the average teenager, which is another thing that drives me up they wall.

The use of apostrophes is appaling and catastrophic!
NOTE: APOSTRPHES ARE ONLY EVER USED FOR CONTRACTIONS AND TO SHOW POSSESSION.

*NEVER FOR PLURALS*

Am I the only one who knows more or less where an apostrophe should go? Are you with me?

So, let us unite in the fight against bad grammer! Education for all and pathetic punctuation shall no longer bother us!

I never know what people are talking about when they use acronyms in their text. And when everything is spelt 'wrong' I just get frustrated. But hey! that's language. There's a new language which is evolving which does not need all the archaic spellings of the English language. If I don't understand what someone is saying when they are speaking(writing) another language, I can do one of two things: (i) Ask them to say it again in Standard English or (ii) Learn their language. I sure can't stop the development of language!

I think American kids are interested in the latest fads- like texting, etc. However, I think it is also a sign of laziness. We have to remember that readers of all ages and backgrounds come to this site. It drives me crazy if I can't understand the message! But, hey, that's the adult in me (and almost 20 years as a teacher).

While you're referring to teen-talk, don't forget the incessant use of the words 'OK' and 'like' as the first word of a sentence--as if they make any sense whatsoever.

Exactly! But let's not forget that the Americans are in love with acronyms!

I completely agree with you. It drives me insane! Some students (college students, I'm talking about!) use this pseudo-English even in communication with their professors. I hate it.
