why doesn't he accept people with different views and beliefs instead of punishing them with an eternity of pain, suffering, and torture?

Why is it that I'm more merciful than this god of theirs?

They created their god, so it's no surprise that it reflects their "values"

and I use the quotes around values for a reason.

Because when Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden his spirit recieved the nature of Satan. Spritual Death or in other words he became separated from God. And that sin nature passed on to all his descendants including you & I.
Jesus came to take our sins away and give us a new nature. He said, "You MUST be born again, or " born from above". He told the most religious people of his day, You are of your father the devil and the works of your father you will do. The devil is a liar and the father of all liars. You & I were both liars. We both have stolen, we both have lusted. In other words we have both broken God's commandments. And God says the penalty is death.
Jesus came to pay the penalty for us and to give all those believe that and recieve God's forgiveness a new nature. A new Life on the inside so that now God can come and live inside us, filling us with His goodness and His nature.
So you see there is no other cure for the sin nature problem than that which God has provided in Jesus. Jesus proved he was the Son of God by many infallable proofs of healings, miracles and of course rising from the dead after 3 days and appearing to more than 500 people for 40 days after his resurrection.
There is no other way to the Father or Heaven than through the provision God has made by the miracle of being born again of the spirit. God is not willing that any should perish and go to hell but wants all men everywhere to repent and come to a saving knowledge of Jesus as savior. However He is also a just God who must punish sin & those who break His Laws. Hell is that eternal jail house and punishment. Please take the pardon He is offering you because Jesus took YOUR punishment for you. Recieve it today.
Read the gospel of John in the New Testament which is the Last Will and Testament of God. In it you, yes you, have an inheritance. It is Eternal Life with joy and peace. Just pray and say, "God if you are real show me, If you are real I want to know you and He will answer your sincere prayer".
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh to the Father except through me. Behold, I stand at the door of your heart and knock, if ANY man open I WILL come in and sup with him and he with me.
Just say Yes!
Your friend, D. Craig

Your question is a bit all over the place. But here goes, How do you know He doesn't? The things humans accept and the things God accepts may not ( as I suspect ) be what we are led to believe.
There is truth in the space between, you are missing the fact that everyone sins, and everyone has a chance and choice to be happy.
And do u mean pain and torture on earth or hell? I can't tell, but in my own life, I have learned that to understand TRUE joy ( like my baby ) I had to over come GREAT AGONY to get him. He was definitelty worth it, but it was definitely painful suffering, and if contractions aren't torture ~ I don't know what is!
How are u more merciful? You sound faith less so how can you know what (great) mercy God has for us? You have to COMPLETELY trust in your faith in Him,not doubt Him, as soon as you don't get your way.

Toronto,

Unfortunately that "bible thumping & brimstone & fire" message has became a stigma on christian which we are fully to blamed.

True christian should be more responsible & show forth what God is really like. Yes is true God is God of Justice & Righteous (hence that where the judgement mentally come from) but foremost God is the God of LOVE & FORGIVENESS.

Jesus himself said " whosoever has no sin, let him cast the 1st stone" on Mary the prostitute. Jesus reach out to Mary with forgiveness & love not judegement. We christian should do the same & respect other. We should have the attitude that we are not prefect just forgiven.

hope this is helpful, peace, man

God is great! He accepts everyone who accepts His Son, Jesus, as their Lord and Savior.

Those who will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire, do so because it was their own choice to refuse to accept God's Word.

You're not merciful. You're just a bigot.

The Christian God has already done all for you and you try to say He is not great. The Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins and offers salvation to all even to you if you would believe in that. If you reject what He done for you then there is a hell you will go to. Revelation 20: 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. Revelation 20: 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 20: 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

I don't know that what you do is a decree of mercy, but the Christian God of which you speak is in the Old Testament. This God was made up at a time when astriocrats needed to control their slaves and made up a really scare God to do so.

Our God is a loving God, the only thing He hates is evil. All you have to do is know in your heart that Jesus gave his life so that we can get closer to our Father. In the old testament people had to sacrifice their perfect, spotless animals and give offerings to the "Church". Our Father knew we were falling short of perfection and didn't understand why. So He born Himself to feel what we were feeling. He found it to be extreamly hard to resist temptation of the flesh so He fulfilled the old testament prophecies and gave Himself for ALL of our sins, so that we may have eternal life ONLY through Jesus The Christ our Lord.

God sent his son to show us the right way to Live and to Take his examples and use He created everything Good and pure and satan after his fall and Sin and man's rebellion corrupted things. He set laws and commandmentts as to how you should do things also, He doesn't change we do. He is a God of Love and he is holy and Just and whethether you are God and man somethings are not right and outward digusting and evil. He sends noone to hell you choose it by refusing to obey his commandments right through the Old testament he said and warned people through the prophets what would happen. He also said I put before you two choices life and death, blessings and curses to those who obey my commandments and love me I will give my angels charge over thee and to hose who don't I will curse them down through the 10th generation choose life and blessings so that you may live. you choose where you go afte death God and Jesus just finalize it.

Unfortunately not only the Christian God have this built-in paradox of exclusion. It is a good point to consider that even those who do not believe in God, are no less children of His as those who do, only they do not know or agree. The problem is there because we think of God as a group of different tribal chiefs or sachems, different one for every tribe (or nation, religion..etc.) Saddening that we see what is wrong with the God of "them" and never see that "our God" is exactly like theirs.

He made you. The manufacturer has the right to say how their products are to be used in order for the guarantee to be valid. You can't take a television, drop it out the window or other misuse and get the manufacturer to guarantee it. Same with God. You cannot misuse yourself and expect Him to reward you. All guarantees have certain guidelines, including God's.
