The world cannot allow dictators to have nuclear weapons. That is like letting the school bully walk around with a machine gun.

North Korea is a better candidate for a war than Iraq but that isn't saying much.

But the US can't go to war against it alone if no-one else sees the urgency.
Also I don't think the US can support a third simultaneous war.

The main threat from North Korea is to its neighbors.
Any action should be taken in concert with them and the UN.

It is a really interesting problem for the president.
His sole justification for war with Iraq was the presence of WMD.
That condition now exists with North Korea and there is no doubt.

If he doesn't launch a unilateral attack on North Korea then it is tantamount to an admission that Iraq was a mistake.

If "we" means the U.S. then no, as it does not make good military or political sense. Militarily, the last attempt to invade Korea was a total flop. The U.S. military is currently bogged down in Iraq and Afganistan (not to mention Bush's pet border patrols) and yet another seemingly pointless war is going to do nothing for morale. Also, North Korea has conducted a sucessful nuclear test. What's to stop them from detonating another golden bullet on top of attacking troops?

Quote:"The field of scientific research in the DPRK successfully conducted an underground nuclear test under secure conditions on October 9, 2006, at a stirring time when all the people of the country are making a great leap forward in the building of a great, prosperous, powerful socialist nation. It has been confirmed that there was no such danger as radioactive emission in the course of the nuclear test as it was carried out under scientific consideration and careful calculation.
The nuclear test was conducted with indigenous wisdom and technology 100 percent. It marks a historic event as it greatly encouraged and pleased the KPA and people that have wished to have powerful self-reliant defense capability. It will contribute to defending the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the area around it."
(aka. "We're going to try to bully the U.N and everyone else into propping up our regime and paying us off.)

Aii29--your answer is soooooo off the mark. Do you not watch any news or read about it while you're surfing around on Yahoo? There have already been "talks" about North Korea testing their nuclear bombs. They refuse to listen to anything that any other country has to say. Kim Jong IL is a total psychopath who doesn't care that the people of his country are starving and dirt poor because of his own actions. There are already numerous sanctions against N. Korea. Now there's going to be more because of his latest little round of tests.
A war against North Korea wouldn't be necessary. A couple of well-aimed cruise missiles would take care of the problem quite nicely. All anyone would have to do is find out where Kim Jong IL is hanging out and aim that missile right down his throat. that would be the best thing for N. Korea. Take him out, and hopefully, someone with all their sanity would step up to take his place. But it's already been proven that "Talk" isn't getting us anywhere with the lunatic.

This is a difficult one. Sadly it may yet be necessary. Unfortunately, it will not be so easy as just aiming a couple of cruise missiles.

We could only contemplate this action if Russia and China where prepared to also fight alongside us. The North Koreans have a formidable number of troops, and whilst the peasantry of the country are dirt poor, the wealth of the country has been used since the 'truce' to build up the military. They have extensive stocks of chemical and biological weapons. They have huge hidden bases underground and their military is distributed all over the place.

This will not be a cakewalk.

I was very much opposed to the invasion of Iraq, and I have since been proved correct about my assesments, pre-invasion, of what the outcome was.

This is TOTALLY different to Iraq. This is totally different from Iran.

North Korea IS a threat, North Korea has gone against the will of the entire UN including Russia and China.

I think there may well be a military draft coming very soon. Are all you armchair generals of fighting age here, ready to take up arms and face the enemy?

What are the chances of effectively solving the problem without military intervention? The fact that N Korea carried out the tests knowing they will face "grave repurcussions" shows that they dont give a damn about our opinions.

With them starting the party, other nations will follow suit and go nuclear. Therefore, unless the major powers decide to go tough which means not afraid to push the military button when the need arises, the future of humanity will really be decided with the push of a button, the button with the words, MAD(Mutually Assured Destruction) on it.
