maltese! they are adorable and small. my aunt is allergic to dogs too but maltese have "hair" not "fur" so there is no problem. they're great dogs. also, they are small so they can use a "wee wee pad" so they dont have to go outside to go to the bathroom which means they wont collect anything from outside that people may be allergic to.

I recommend a poodle. Or a small terrier. My family is also allergic to dogs that shed, and we have not had any problems with those two breeds.
Also try looking at some dog buying dogs. The book in my sources below has lots of pictures and lots of information about most breeds (what to expect deposition wise, allergies, around kids, other pets, etc.). It's also fairly inexpensive.
I also recommend checking out more information at your local animal shelter, as they are not just pushing you to buy a dog, but to permantly adopt a dog. They will make sure that you get best dog for you, they will put more thought into it. And please get your dog spayed or neutered, overpopulation of dogs and cats is much bigger problem then people realize.

The best breed by far for this situation would be a Bichon Frise. They are hypo-allergenic, do not shed, and have wonderful dispositions. There is a new craze now that involves crossing everything with poodles, which yes, they don't shed, but Poodles don't always have the greatest personalities. Nor do Terriers. Bichons are wonderful animals and very cute...I like the puppy cut, which means their hair gets cut short, when other people sometimes get it a little longer, like the show dogs.
Remember no matter what breed you choose, always find a reputable breeder and ask for references. Puppy shopping should be fun...enjoy it and good luck!

All dogs shed...no matter what..All these little short-haired dogs mentioned in these answers...They shed! Some breeds have less dander than others or have a single-layer coat, which does lessen the amount of hair...but, there are no breeds that are truly hypoallergenic..Please research carefully before you decide to do this..It doesn't sound like the smartest idea for your sister to be around dog hair..If you do decide to get a dog remember that's a commitment..you can't just throw it away if it bothers your sister!

I had the same case and I got a poodle. A typical poodle has a ugly cut but if you let their hair grow out they look really nice. I would recommend a miniature poodle because they are slightly bigger than the toy poodle but they are more friendly. They are great dogs and very smart. My dog was potty trained within 2 days and never made an accident in the house after that. Poodles are easy dogs that adjust well with your everyday life. Good luck!

Saw a clip on Laboodles a couple years ago. Hybrid Lab with Poodle. They're attractive like labs but have the hair of the poodle so are great for allergies. They're big though (size of lab) and pricey.
I have to agree w/ a hairless dog like Chihuhua or Chinese Crested (both small) or a miniature Poodle. There's something about the fur of the poodle that makes it terrific for people w/ allergies.

There is so much conterversary about the non shedding dogs and people who should own certain breeds because of this. But the truth is there is no real perfect breed for your sister with her allergy problems. There are so many different breeds that suppose to good for people with problems. But realistically. All dogs, all breeds can cause allergy problems. From hair, dander or something else. Research AKC for informaiton.

Poodles are hypoallergenic. They are probably going to be your best bet if the dog is going to be in a home with someone who is allergic to pet dander. Some of those pets that don't necessarily shed alot still have dander that will upset someone's allergies. Now they are cross breeding poodles with many different breeds to. The crosses can be expensive though. Good luck with the dog search!

I was just speaking with the owners of two Italian Greyhounds yesterday and they said these dogs do not shed and they are 'low dander' dogs.
I've attached a great web site that tells all about breed choices for people allergic to dogs.

Any of the small breeds who have hair-like fur instead of regular fur don't shed. Breeds such as shih tzus, maltese, yorkies.
