I gave blood on Wednesday - September 27. I'm 16 and that was the first time I was able to give blood. I filled out the questions and then they had me on the bed, when the lady came she was poking my arm to find a vein, in which she failed to find one in my right arm, so she switched me to my left. She found the vein but the pokes she made in to my skin wouldn't stay so she poked me harder. (It hurt worse then getting the needle put in your arm). After she successfully got the pokes she got the needle. She wasn't careful about it, she shoved it in my arm which hurt me. So as I'm laying there she notices that the blood wasn't flowing right. She said I have a slow draw and messed with the needle. After trying she couldn't get it and disposed of my blood. I went home and told my mother and she said that maybe she made a mistake doing it because when I get get cut at home, I bleed a lot. Is it possible that when she did it she went through the other side of the vein? ...

Also I have had this bruise for a week now, and it still won't go away. It hasn't even begun to heal and it hurts to bend my arm... How long is this suppose to last?

Thanks ♥

yes, this lady messed up big time.

If you ever decide to donate again, ask for a senior phlebotomist. Tell them if they miss again you will leave immediately. They have a lot to loose, you deserve better treatment.

Thank you again for trying to save life's. I work in a hospital base blood bank and have to use this precious gift of life everyday. Believe me you could use many more responsible young adults like you.
Do not get discouraged.

I doubt it was that she went through the vein, but it does sound like she was particularly inept at finding and accessing a vein - you should probably have said something on the day - it shouldn't hurt like that and the bruising and soreness should go down after a few days - that's what happens with me when I give blood.

So sorry you had a such a bad first experience, it isn't usually like that at all - usually it is just a sharp prick and then off the blood goes. I hope you don't let it put you off as giving blood is such a valuable thing to do.

She might have been new and telling you that you had a slow draw was her way of being able to stop without saying she was wrong. The bruising sometimes happens. It should go away soon. It was probably caused by her being a little rough. Good for you for trying to give blood. There should be more 16 year olds like you.

I've been donating blood on a regular basis for about 11 years now. In my experience there should be minimal bruising and should not be to sensitive in the area of the needle stick. Low blodd pressure could cause you to bleed slowly, that should have been checked before you started to donate. If your blood pressure was excesivly low then you shouldn't have been allowed to donate. Another reason for the slow blled is thatthe needle could not have been inserted properly, as you have stated. If i were you I would consult a doctor.

It sounds like the person who did it didn't do a good job.

Normally giving blood isn't that bad. Sometimes it pinches a little and sometimes they miss and have to retry - but not all that often. If someone messes up twice, you can tell them to forget it, you'll just give next time.

You will probably heal just fine, but if you are concerned you could make an appointment with the doctor.

No. Because any one who has ever performed venipuncture on me is going, "Where the f*ck are your veins." My veins are slim and do not particularly cross in a instantly line all that so much. I have had anesthesiologists inform me they could now not desire to be those hanging an IV in me. I don' t recognize what my blood sort is. I'm certain the medical institution is aware of from the final travel I needed to the ER.

It's most likely that she totally miss the vein all together. If you decide to donate blood again, tell them about your first experience and ask for someone that is gentile and knows what they are doing. I've donated blood four times before and only had one bad experience with a person who didn't insert the IV right.

You got a bad nurse. I have had the same problem, now I just ask for someone else. Usually it goes easily. Giving blood is important don't let one bad time stop you Good Luck

She never knew where to poke.

Better you see a doctor as its still not healing after a week.

Coconut water helps healing any kind of wounds.

Cheers....!!
