I guess mid town, but any place near a subway stop would be good. Do you think we should get a "back room" for 20 people?

Private room is the way to go. Most restos are too loud to be able to hear one end of the table from the other.

Here is a good list http://newyork.citysearch.com/yellowpages/results/New_York_NY/page1.html?flavor_id=2&cw3=17

I'd NOT go to an Italian restaurant. Anything here unless it's Becco's or Mario's will pale compared to the food in Italy. Try Ben's Kosher restaurant. Or maybe the Brazilian place on 49th between 8th and 9th. Maybe Virgil's or Blue Smoke for southern barbecue. Give the visitors a taste of something they can't get there. Something uniquely New York. When we had out of town guests we'd always go to Second Avenue Deli and walk around the corner to Veniero's for dessert. Since the deli closed, you can go to Holy Basil on Second Avenue between 9th and 10th and still go to Veniero's on 11th and 1st.

I'd say when you choose your resto... make reservations first... let them know you are coming... so they can setup first... end you won't end up waiting 25 min. for a table. Have fun!
