Yes & no....
the 'vein' is actually the prawn's digestive tract.
The contents is actually a very fine sand (why it has a slightly gritty texture) and partially digested algae & plant matter (shrimp food). Totally harmless, but not nice to get a 'gritty' prawn, languistine or shrimp.
Split (butterfly) with a knife before cooking & rinse under running water.

there is a black line that goes from the head to the tail, yes it is poo. Just run a knife down it and rinse it out, won't hurt ya' if you accidentally eat it...

yes and if you are cooking you need to remove it before cooking. if you find it at a dinner house, insist that they clean shrimp prior to cooking. if they refuse then i would leave and eat somewhere else.
