DPRK has been living under sanctions for a very long time. The only support they receive comes from China and S. Korea. This has always been presented to the citizens of the DPRK as their 'right.'
These sanctions and restrictions are so tight that the latest article by National Geographic noted that there were no birds in the cities and all the vegetation had been denuded. Both were exhausted in an attempt to supplement food supplies. In a different article NG was documenting the amount of light generated on our planet at night. As can be expected, industrialised countries were lit up brightly; the DPRK was a black hole.
When the DPRK started to seriously go nuclear these restrictions and sanctions were tightened. Talks were convened for a diplomatic solution between the six powers (China, Russia, Japan, US and the two Koreas). North Korea felt it was being singled out for its history of selling weaponry, drugs and counterfeit funds and as such withdrew.
In the current releases from the DPRK news agency, we, the world, are in awe of their glorious leader and must now deal with them in the same way as the other nuclear powers. Essentially it is a blatant threat that if we don't ease restrictions they may decide to take with force that which they cannot get by threat. First it will be food and fuel, and then the glorious reunification of the Korean peninsula.
Remember GW Bush lumped Iraq, Iran and DPRK together as an axis of evil and was ridiculed.
The UN wants to sanction Iran to prevent nuclear development. Seeing how well sanctions worked in Iraq (over 10 years worth) and how the DPRK has turned out with sanctions, what do you believe the outcome will be in Iran?

It's all a bit "look at ME!"
If they wanted to develop a nuclear weapon in secret for clandestine use, they wouldn't be boasting about it. Not only did they announce that they had tested it, but they also declared that they were going to test one.
It's basically a big middle finger to the West, showing that even though we might try to contain them, they're still going to do what they want.
Admittedly, now that they have tested a bomb, and with even China condemning it, they might be up sh!t creek, as it's likely that all foreign aid will cease. This could easily cripple the "Workers' Paradise", as the vast majority of said aid is put towards propping up the military.

Purpose?? To see if it works of course........
Politically? They really don't care. They are one of the most political & economically isolated nations on earth. They sell drugs, missles, & print counterfit US dollars to make money. The nation is run but a nut with absolute power. They "gain" only a bullseye for a B-52 bomber wing.....
On the brightside? We can stop talking about Anna Nicole Smith for awhile.

It could be because we're squeezing thier balls off with sanctions. Not that I care, because North Korea has had a beef with us for 50 years, but we are in effect forcing them to. We've frozen several accounts of theirs and basically took money from them. North Korea annouced it to show "we won't be bullied anymore" something you have to consider is the N.Koreans actually belive they could take on the entire wolrd if need be. They are taught this from birth and they will figght to the death of every last man, women and child.
This is for the record our start of the 3rd WW. it may take a few months, but it will happen. from their point of view its "my enemies enemy is my allie" and lets face it, between china, russia, japan, UK, US and germany we have several small enemies that could make one very big enemy.

The show of might by all of these smaller countries only stems from our preoccupation in the middle east area. If we were not so involved I bet these things would not transpire at all.
