I want to start doing murals to bring in some side money. What is the best way to get the first few customers so you can build a portfolio? Do I charge for supplies, and per hour?

I charge per project not per hour, and I think you will find it difficult to charge for a mural per hour because of their incredible size. To get the first few commissions is by far the hardest part. Your best bet is just to network with people and talk to them about doing murals... but you'll need to have some sample work, so you should practice with a dropcloth or something that you can work large on.
