I'm pretty sure he already has.
He said in 2500 years he would appear in the West. He didn't call himself Maitreya, but he did complete the mission he started 2500 years ago . Thanks to the advances in scientific knowledge in the West in the last 100 years or so.
Because of his research into the human spirit and the technology that he developed, we now have a Bridge or route to spiritual freedom that anyone can travel and achieve "bodhi", rather than just a few.
He did not forsake any of us.

There were many Buddhas in the past and present buddhas are scarce. Buddha means "the enlightened".

Many people in the past has become enlightened, thus buddhas. Waiting for a dead being to return is stupid. But you can take that for a metaphorical meaning, that is, a master is always here to trigger you. They are scarce, and the wrong are many and dangerous. better elevate yourself to be a master without the need of a physical one.

The Buddah never claimed to return after death. His whole life's mission was to escape the cycle of birth-death-rebirth, or the transmigration of souls (reincarnation), and help others do the same. His goal was to become one with the All-Soul, NEVER to return to earth again.

He never claimed to be God, either.
