Is that kind of like verifying a reservation? You get initial salvation (a reservation) by bowing down to the Jesus/God thingy, then you have to give up your credit card number to secure the seat on the Jesus train to heaven by doing good works?

Is this how it works? can someone help clear up this confusion?

Thanks WDJD. But I haven't done any of those things, yet, would it help if I did? Would I then need salvation?

what you have to do is get brainwashed by a church....and then answer questions on yahoo with lines that reek of memorised dogma, without a shread of free thought. then you get to go to heaven...

No, it isn't like securing a reservation. It is more like acting like a proper member of a particular family.

One example can be found with certain Native American Tribes in their discipline of children. They would not use corporeal punishment. Instead, they would say (in their language) "My son, The People do not act like this!" The understanding is, if the action is continued, the person's place as a member of the tribe is in jeapordy.

Basically, those who claim to have life through Jesus Christ should act like it! They should do whatever they do out of kindness and love and reverence towards God, with the love for others that God supplies. It doesn't matter if the "good works" are laundry, dishes, vaccuming the rug, serving food at a homeless shelter, or passing out medicines. We should be a good impact on our communities, doing "good" works, and not "evil".

Does that help?

Once you have received the gift of salvation, you are to walk in a Christlike way. If you do that you are doing the works. You will be treating people as you wish to be treated, helping those in need, helping people through a tough time, etc. In other words your actions on a daily basis, or the changes in your lifestyle as a result of following Christ's example, will be the works by showing others your faith. If you talk the talk, then you should be able to walk the walk.

I would be Glad to clear up the confusion. first I would like to ask you a question, Do you consider yourself to be a good person? Lets lok at Gods standard to see How you do on judgement day.......

Have you ever lied (even once--fibs, white lies, etc.)? Ever stolen (anything--the value is irrelevant)? Jesus said, "Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery already with her in his heart." Have you ever looked with lust? If you have said "Yes" to these three questions, by your own admission, you are a lying, thieving, adulterer at heart; and we’ve only looked at three of the Ten Commandments. the BIble says God requires perfection, even in the inward parts. Theirfore you cannot be let into heaven by trying to live right, because you have already failed and God has a record of every time you have lied and stole and looked with lust or even thought about a girl with lustful thoughts. Your in big trouble, The BIBle says The penalty for your sin is death and Hell. what are you going to do? theres great news, God has provided a way for you to be forgiven. He sent His Son to take our punishment: "God commended His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." He was bruised for our iniquities. Jesus then rose from the dead and defeated death.
Your own so-called “goodness” can’t get you into heaven any more than mine could. Jesus is the only way to Heaven. He is the "Door," the only "mediator." There is salvation in no other name. your own works will never earn you a way inot Heaven, your already guilty of breaking those commandments, but If you will surrender andRepent (turn from sin) and put your full faith and trust in Jesus alone to save you, God will forgive you and grant you the gift of everlasting life. Repent and trust in Jeus today if you havent. The only assurabce we have is faiuth in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross.
God Bless

There is nothing you do to secure your salvation. Salvation is a gift to believers in Christ. With that said, the "faith without works is dead" means that if you truly believe in Christ. If you believe that he came to earth and died for your trespasses. Why wouldn't you do something "the works" to tell others about the what Christ has done and the gift he offers?

I wont say that sometimes people are not called to donate but, I think "the works" in this case apply to your communication to others about the Word of God. Remember God is in control and changes people but, we are told to communicate the word.

No this is not how it works... the scripture that you are referring to so flippantly is James 2:20. It simply means that if someone has truly been regenerated (saved;born again) their actions will reveal the change in their heart. Salvation is a free gift(Rom 6:23) you cannot earn it... JESUS already paid for it on the cross for everyone who will receive it. Hope this helps....

You have to REPENT. Repent is an action word; a verb.
That requires faith.
Faith is also an action word;a verb.

First you recieve the Word.
Then you decide if the Word is right and true by living after it.
If it brings you closer to God, brings more happiness, and you FEEL it's right, etc., then you know it is right and true.

This is what faith is.

Acting on something you believe, otherwise it would just be hope. You hope something, and then that hope grows into faith, and then that faith can eventually become knowledge.

Works do not inheirt you heaven. Eph. 2:8-9
After we get saved is when works come into play.
If I said I was saved and had no works that was godly would you believe I was saved. Jesus Christ is the one who saves. Its a free gift to anyone, but many will refuse that free gift.

Faith without works is dead, however Luther believed that you can't get faith just by doing works. Here's a link on Luther's definition of faith: http://www.iclnet.org/pub/resources/text/wittenberg/luther/luther-faith.txt

Hope that helps!
