For Sukkoth we build small tent-like structures covered with tree branches, and invite our friends to share a meal with us in the sukkah. The sukkah is to remind us of how our ancestors lived during the 40 years in the wilderness.

For Shavuot, we have a cheesecake bakeoff and eat cheesecake and other desserts while studying the Torah all night long. You're welcome to join us!

Shavuoth is the commemoration of the receiving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. Traditionally, dairy meals (at least on the first night) are the order of the day along with prayer and learning Torah.

Sukkoth has many meanings...however, it is mostly connected to the rememberance of the Exodus from Egypt. Observance involves dwelling in the sukkah (temporary structures) for 7 days and taking of the 4 species (citron, palm branch, plaited myrtle and brook willow). The four species represent parts fo the body according to some opinions or the '4 types of Jews' according to others. In either case, the taking of the four together represents unity of the Jewish people.

Today is the 17th of Tishrai in the 5767th year from creation. Tishrai is either the 1st or 7th month, depending on what you're counting from.
