There have been some great boxers,in the modern era you could say on the Heavyweights are .
Ali 1964, 1965, 1965 to 1966 ,1966 to1967,1974 to 1977 and 1978
Mike Tyson 1987 to 1989 and 1989 and 1996
Joe Louis Champ from 1937 to 1948
Rocky Marciano 1952 to 1955 unbeaten over 49 fights.
Then your have the other weights.
Its a hard choice My Favourite is Ali but the rest were not to shabby.

each of us will have our own boxing heroes depending on our ages as each generation a new champion arrives to the ring.
The 20s it was Jack Dempsey the 30s to 40s brought in Joe Louis. in the 1960s you had Muhammad Ali. To the 90s when Mike Tyson and up until today when you have a people like Prince Naseem Hamed who are true show man. To me all of these could hold the title of Best boxer.

The best pure boxers were Benny Leonard and Willie Pep. Perhaps the best all around fighters were Ray Robinson, Harry Greb, Henry Armstrong...there are others. Robinson is the pick of most because he combined boxing skills, speed and uncanny power.
Ali was a great fighter...but he was unorthodox and not exactly a textbook fighter. If we are talking absolutes, Ali probably beats anyone who ever fought (though certain styled fighters will gave good shots to beat him). If we are talking against their own size fighters, relatively, the names I mentioned trump Ali in my mind, as well as Roberto Duran as a lightweight for example.

Simply ......."Marvelous" Marvin Hagler . For 9 years there was only one Middleweight champion of the world . This was in the golden age of the "MIDDLEWEIGHTS" . Vito Antuofermo (Marvelous beat him twice ) ,Alan Minter ( remember the Wembley beer bath ?) ,Fugencio Olelmejias ( Future Champ ) ,Mustafo Hamsho ( once again , Hagler beat him 2X ) , Caveman Lee (1 RD. ) , Roberto Duran ( THE first to go the distance with Hagler ) , Juan Roldan ( who floored Hagler just seconds into the Fight , Just too piss him off )And the greatest , action filled Boxing match I ever saw "HAGLER vs.HEARNS" ... simply "Marvelous".....
