There were nearly 300 different gods that were worshipped by the local population. Upon conquest of the region, he cleared out the various other idols inside what is now the Kabah (the large box at Mecca). He kept one god out of the entire collection, known as "Allah" - or the Moon God. (Hence the muslim affiliation with the Crescent Moon.)

Islam always has existed, but it was not called Islam prior to the prophecy of Mohammed (pbuh). The word Islam just means submission, and a Muslim is one who submits to the will of God. Technically, anyone who follows his or her understanding of God and continually seeks knowledge is also a Muslim, whether they know "Islam" as written in the Quran or not.
The Arabs who became the first Muslims were mostly polytheists or unbelievers before they were introduced to Islam. Some were also Christians and some were Jews, but mostly the polytheists persecuted all other religious groups.

There were no "People of Islam" before Islam. And there are no People of Islam even now. They are called Muslims. Before Islam people were idol worshippers and going through the dark ages. Islam gave them a new meaning in life, a light that they could follow.

they don't "worship" Mohammed, they worship God. Mohammed was a prophet to them, and is as important in their religion as Moses to the Jewish faith

In the area where Muhammad lived, most people had been pagans. The idea of the hajj (the journey to Mecca) was actually originally based on the pagan ritual of seeing a special rock. (i don't remember why the rock had importance though.
