On my way to work, I pass though a few small towns. On the edge of these towns the speed limit goes up. Since I can see the sign 50-70 yards away, CAN I SPEED UP or past the sign first?

The new speed limit is effective at the sign and beyond. Just because you can see it doesn't mean it's effective starting at the point where you can see it. Come on! What if you had binoculars? Does that mean you can speed up a mile back? Or that just because you can see the state borderline up ahead that you are already in that other state?

The speed limit STARTS AT the point of the sign.

Where the sign is on the road, is the exact starting point for that "speed zone". Once you past the sign posted, you may increase your current speed.

Pass the sign first. I got a ticket in front of a 45 sign while I was still in the 30mph zone.

The speed limit is from that point on... If you start speeding up
when you can clearly see the sign and are not playing Rodney
Racer you should not have any problem.....
