The light is like the good news that Jesus brought about grace and forgiveness. You don't hide it. Like a lamp, you share it with everyone so that they too may see. If you were to put it under a bed or in a drawer, you would be hiding the light (good news).

Luke 8:16 (New International Version)
No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.
I think it is self-explanatory.

If you are good at something (your light) don't hide it from others (put it under the bed) show people you are talented instead (put it on the table) and let the world see the gifts God has given you.

He was talking about fire in his metaphor, which would have to be different today. He was talking about the faith being the light, it showing the way as a lamp does and that you don't hid it you lead with it. Too bad that Christians have not been able to get their candle burning. Instead of leading in the light they are scaring in the darkness.

considering this was long before electricity, putting a lamp under a bed would have started the whole place on fire and everybody would have seen that--jesus was a retard

Jesus Himself gave the explanation after making this statement. He went on to say: "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven." (Matthew 5: 16). Christians are not entitled to keep the good news to themselves. They are under a responsibility to share it with all around them.

In my view it means if you have something to offer mankind then offer it don't hold it soley for your benefit. It's a beautiful parable which has more meaning now than ever.
I wonder is the quran has such an elequent generous eqivalent.

it means that as Christians, we are lights unto the world. we are not to hide this light from the rest of the world, but rather expose the light and let it shine for a high vantage point.

He meant that light is meant to be spread and shine, not hidden. Jesus was referring to himself as the light, and that Jesus and his ministry is not something to be kept to yourself, but to be spread to others.
Remember in Sunday school learning the song "This little light of mine?"
