As a general rule, if you are eating seafood you should drink white. With chicken either white or red is acceptable. With meats such as veal chopsor lamb or pork I would recommend a red THAT YOU LIKE! It does not really matter what wine you put with a meal if you do not prefer a red wine. However, with lamb iif you want to go light, go with a Pinot Noir. If you want something medium bodied i would avoid merlot and go for a nice red blend or an alternate red such as a Cabernet Franc, Red Zinfandel, or a Shiraz. No mstter what, don't drink it if you don't enjoy it. Wine of for enjoyment and you do not always have to follow "the rules" according to your waiter or an answer from anyone else who may answer your question. Enjoy your lamb

This site has a food and wine pairing wheel, a wine and food pairing wheel, a wine and chees pairing wheel.

According to the wheel
Pinot Noir
Merlot
Zinfandel
Cabernet Sauvignon
Shiraz / Syrah
are all acceptable pairing for lamb. Just pick one you like best.

edit
If you're preparing the lamb with basil, try a Zinfandel or Primitivo.

Lamb is sweet, kind of. I would serve either Syrah, or possibly Shiraz - i like Shiraz.

It used to be the rule that certain types of wine should go with certain foods. that still holds true for optimum flavour. Now it's usually what ever you like. Sweet meats - dry wine, salty meats sweet wine, or white meats - white wine, red meats - red wine. dessert wines are nice with lamb.

Try Red Bordeaux or its new world equivalent eg Cabernet or Cabernet based blends.
Or, if you have access, Red Zinfandel is super yummy as well!
