You are walking down the road, on your merry way, and all of sudden, from out of nowhere, is a very big and mean looking dog sitting in the middle of the road. You stop dead in your tracks, and begin to be very afraid. This dog looks viscious. You have nothing to use as a weapon to defend yourself, and there is not anyone around anywhere. You are very careful to not make any sudden moves so as to not disturb him. How would you handle this? I honestly don' t know how I would handle this situation. Any advice?

Does this kind of thing happen to you often? Just wondering.

Anytime you're faced with a dog that may be aggressive, a couple of things you always remember.
1) Never turn your back to the animal
2) Establish dominance. Be confident, stand up straight.
3) Look them in the eye. Looking away shows submission.
4) Act like the dogs presence is unimportant to you but keep up your guard.

If the animal advances on you,
1)Stop moving
2)Watch for signs of attack, in an untrained dog they'll be things like lowered ears, straightened tail, lowering the head
3) Stand fast until the dog looses interest.
4) Do not make contact or aggressive movements unless you have no other option. Picking a fight with a dog usually means killing it if you're not trained to deal with this type of problem.

If the animal attacks, you have several options. I know some of them sound silly, but they work. If the dog latches on to you, some dogs have a ridge down the center of the skull, it's a very weak point. If you have to, hit the dog there for all you're worth. It will kill the dog. Another tactic is to make a fist and shove it down the dogs throat, it's not as hard as it sounds when the animal is attacking. The animal will choke to death. Do not attempt any of these actions unless you are prepared to kill the animal or you feel that you have no other options. Once you've started, if you back down you'll loose the fight. You also have the option of placing your fist into the dogs mouth and grabbing the animals lower jaw and squeezing it. You can hold most aggressive dogs this way with little effort until help arrives. Many times if the dog struggles free, he will run. It is very painful for them.

Any time you come into contact with an unknown animals mouth, report the incident, and see a doctor. Rabies may be a factor.

If the least threatening thing to do is to just slowly turn around, and head back the other way, I would. If you can't do that, don't make any fast moves, some dogs consider this as aggressive on your part. If you must keep walking on your path, try not to look him in the eyes, and walk slow, and try not to show fear.
( extremely difficult, I think) If you have something heavy, and you need to use it, have it ready; just in case, as a last measure, you need to bop him on the head with it...
I hope this never actually happens to you...

first and foremost dogs smell fear they do not see it ........fear is like steak to them even your smallest dog will advance when they smell this....if you are unsure of the dog do not turn your back on it that's how they take down their opponent by the back of the neck they pull them down and open the throat....no this will not happen to you.... usually the large dogs just look intimidating ...... how can you tell by looking unless they were displaying aggression chances are he just wanted to be petted.... always approach with caution and be calm remember they smell fear keep eye contact smile speak softly and offer your hand,,, do all these things if he is not showing aggression... if he is showing aggression stomp your foot firmly and tell him firmly NO GO HOME BAD DOG and continue with this as you back up and get yourself from the area remember do not turn your back keep your eyes on him until you are a very safe distance away......if you can not get away and and he is beginning to advance DO NOT RUN lift your leg to block the jump and plant him with a punch right in the throat or his eye these are very sensitive areas keep at it all the while screaming bad dog no until help arrives.... never back down if the dog is large enough and you back down you will lose

Start to camly talk to him as you back away, or if you need to get past him hum (loudly) as you walk right past him. Avoid looking into his eyes, as thats a way dogs challange each other.

I heard singing is a very good way too, as dogs are relaxed by the music scale going up and down.

Most of the time a dog wont attack a humane being unless they are trying to protect someone they love...

Look away from the dog and slowly continue walking. It is important to NOT look the dog directly into the eyes.

Don't turn your back on the dog. Back away from it and avoid eye contact. Do keep your eyes on it though incase it should charge at you. You said it looks mean but most dogs will growl or bark if they are truly mean. Be prepared to defend yourself if it does come at you.

Don't run...dogs love to chase.

Talk calmly, say things like good dog...good boy.. backing up slowly.

If he attacks, kick him in the head, ...hard! You may have only one shot.
