try reformatting it and if that doesnt work, there is an apple warranty on them cuz this is a known problem. My bf reformatted my 30g video that would do that, and I havent had an issue since. But, you can have apple look at it- check out the website.

try the software upgrade feature, my mate has an ipod and its banjaxed only had the thing like 8 months never dropped it, the sound quality is really crappy and always has been. and the battery life sucks, i get more time off my mobile battery while talking and it dosnt need an overnight charge
he has a 256 mb mp3 player that is 2x as old and has had the living s*it beaten out of it and it still works fine i have the same model of mp3 and mine that has recieved maginally better treatment and is fine too, has never needed a reformat or a software upgrade, and it uses AA rechargable batterys :) which is handy wen ur battery craps out while ur on the train cos u can just switch to another one.
personally i dont see the point in a 40gb battery-powered hard disk hanging around ur neck, cos the average person will never use the vast majority of it

I have had the same problem with my iPod. I'm not very good with computer problems so took my ipod into the Apple Store on Regent St. They help you out for free and are really good. I found that its best to book in a time slot as it gets quite busy in there.

Try completely erasing or reformatting it (it is, after all, just a hard drive), and then try recording music to it again and playing it. If it continues to act in this manner, and it's under warranty, send it back to Apple to have them fix it! Warranty work is free.

Also, you may want to check the Apple site to see if it is a known issue with that model. If it is, there may be a fix you can download and install, or Apple may take it back to fix it, or send you a new one.

Good luck!

If its brand new looking buy another one and swap them out the box, then take the defective one back to the store and return it, with the receipt. IPods dont have serial #'s I believe.

Have you put the latest software on there as well? I had the same problem where it would freeze and i would have to keep re-booting it. Then, i wiped it, put the latest firmware on there and it's been fine since.

Cheers

Try asking the wise people at the www.ilounge.com forums. There is nothing they don't know about ipods, but *please* search first to make sure your question hasn't already been asked, you wouldn't want to look like a fool ; )

Good luck!
