All my life my hair has had a slight wave to it but for the most part was full and straight. I turned 40, (I am now almost 42) and my hair has turned into Shirley Temple Curls! I don't know how to cope with it. I have never had curly hair. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them? Does anyone know why this happens? I do have curly haired people in my family but I have never had it. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Any hormonal changes whatsoever could be to blame..ie: menopause, or thyroid issues. I hope that helps

I agree with Marie above, it's some kind of hormonal change. I had straight hair as a child. When I was 11 and started going through puberty, my hair turned curly. There are so many suggestions on this forum on how to deal with curly hair. You should click on "discover" and look through some old answers. I care for my hair by using Suave curly conditioner everyday in the shower because it's super moisturizing. I only shampoo twice a week because it dries out my hair and curly hair tend to be very dry. Then I use Beyond Zone's Noodle Head when my hair is damp. I just let it air dry. Hope this helps!

It's normal for hair to change every 7 years or so. It's due to hormones. I had stick straight hair as a child and then it got wavy and then wavy/curly. Genetics may also play a factor as well. My mother's hair did the same thing. Maybe some of your other curly headed family members had straight hair that suddenly went curly too. You could ask them.

It's just one of those weirderies in life...
I used to have wavy hair. Then I let it grow really long, then I cut it. Now it's growing back straight.
