why do many people sit with their legs crossed?

When I see many women celebrities on TV, like on David Letterman or Jay Leno, especially the ones who wear nice dresses, most of them sit down with their legs crossed. I don't know why they sit like that. If you ladies do sit like that, can you explain why do sit that? It's that almost every women have a habit of how they sit

From where I come from, it is customary for a woman to sit with her legs crossed, I think its because most men have "x-ray vision"

As for us men,... sitting with our legs crossed may be quite uncomfortable... if you know what I mean.

It is mannerisms and body language . Women cross their legs to say they are not available.. and men do the opposite.
