We have an airedale terrier, although the breed does not have a fierce reputation like doberman, rotweiler, or pitt bull. He is a big dog, and I don't think anyone would mess with him. He has worked pretty well as a guard dog for us. My younger siblings are 5 and 10, and get a long with it great. He is very friendly with people, and he seems to have a good sense of people. There are certain people he does not like (and we have found out later on that there was good reason for this.)
The problem is with larger dogs is that they will need more exercise than smaller dogs, so make sure you mum is also aware of that.
If you can find a dog that is good with kids, your mum should be safe even if it is not a big scary dog. My mum was talking to a police officer one day, and he asked her if we had a dog. She said yes, and he told her he has never had a break-in case with someone who owns a dog.

would say the best guard dog is a Doberman. A bigger dog isn't always a better guard dog, although it might frighten people b/c of the size, being larger means it's less agile. That is why the doberman was bred to be a medium sized dog, so that it was compact enough to still be very agile and do the work it was bred for.The doberman is one of the few dogs that was intentionally bred as a guard dog. And ANYONE who has ever seen a dobie give a mean face is not going to try to cross their path. Their teeth are a bit larger (being a guard dog, rather than a herder or retriever). If someone does come in they were bred to protect, so if guarding doesn't work, they will then start protecting and doing what they can, trying to bite, barking, all-in-all, attempting to get the person out of their territory. Overall I think they make the best guard dog. They are also extremely loyal and great family dogs. The love being with you and want to go wherever you go. They are called 'velcro' dobes b/c they stick to your side whether you are watching tv, going to the bathroom or doing dishes. Great with children b/c the are very tolerant and have a high threshold for pain(so they won't easily get hurt from a child pulling on ears or what not). Also they aren't bouncy dogs jumping on children and people, they are very calm and mellow when indoors, unless you want them to play, then they can get quite riled up and have some fun. Minimal requirements for grooming (only supposed to be bathed a couple times a year) and not much in the way of brushing.
Oh and I wanted to add if you decide to get a dobie, go with a female, they are better guard dogs and she would treat your kids like her own puppies

Rottweiler definitely.
Don't believe all the bad press they get. Dangerous dogs don't exist, just dangerous and irresponsible owners. If I wanted to, I could train a chihuahua to be vicious!
Females are less domineering and are natural family pets, thriving in the pack environment. Also make sure that she is well socialised with people of all types from a young age and you won't have any problems.
My 1 year old female Rottweiler, Cleo, has met new people every day of her life and she can't wait to say hello to even more. She has become best friends with my neighbours kids too.
The most important thing for your mum is guarding also. Normal discipline will be OK but there are guard training classes available in most cities for extra confidence training. Rottweilers are extremely intelligent, knowing the difference between friends and foes instinctively.
They have the most powerful bite in the domestic animal world so after her 1st birthday, she should take the leg off anyone trying to break in. I pity anyone trying to break in when she is grown after 2 years.
They are not naturally noisy dogs either under normal circumstances, so they are good in the house.

We have a pitbull and although you hear a lot of negative things about pitbulls, it all depends on how they are raised. We have a 1 year old daughter and a 3 year old son and I completely trust my pitbull around them. She loves those kids and waits by the door in the morning for them to wake up so she can give them kisses!! She is a great guard dog and I even think that she looks at my children as her own since she doesn't let strangers near them

Rotweiller would be a good choice, some say they are vicious, but most of them are pretty good, I'd recomend you get one froma good breeder so you know they have good bloodlines as thats how they get their personality...genes
German shepherds are nice too, but they don't seem to guard quite like I like them to
There are plenty of dogs like the bulldogs and things, but you'd have to do a lot of research on them, cause you don't want to have them until you know what your getting into.
Oh, and if you want to get a dog that'll just let her know someone is there, but not to protect her you can get a pomerainion...they sure are loud when people come!!

a pitbull although they get a bad rap in the media they are one of the most loyal dogs you can have.....they were first bred for fowl hunting then later for family protection which still remains today...that is why most gangsters use them they will die protecting you.. they are my breed of choice my kids have been around them since they were 3and 5 they are now 13 and 15 they are very lovable if you raise them properly remember its not a bad dog its the bad owner with a pitbull people will think twice before they enter your yard that is enough deterent right there bless the media for that even though most of them are big babies themselves... they have a bad rep it is all due to their owners not the breed itself... however no matter what breed you choose it is how you raise them that counts if it is a job you want him to do you have to teach him yourself dogs are not born aggressive......

Rottweiler. My Rotti is the most well behaved and gentle dog. Just the sight of him and the sound of his bark would deter any criminals.
