So we know that the family is originally Irish, and that Kennedy is the anglicized form of a name that must have been on the order of O'Cennétig. But what part of Ireland to they come from? Were they ruling clan for any particular area as the O'Briens were kings of Cashel and the O'Neills lorded it over most of Ulster?

Note. I don't necessarily mean only the presidential Kennedys. Kennedy is not that rare a name, and all are of interest to me.

I've done my Homework. Walter E. you get bad marks. The Kennedy's of Scotland were an offshoot of the Irish Lords of Ormond. Sephen Jay's answer is still poised to get best answer award, to be attributed sunday night if nothing really good shows up.

James Hickey, another of JFK's great-grandfathers, was born in 1836 in Cork, County Cork, Ireland.
Margaret M. Field, wife of James Hickey, was born in 1835 in Rosscarbery, County Limerick, Ireland.

I found this information on ancestry.com (see link below). I don't know how accurate any of this information is.

many of the irish are of the descent of norsemen especially around dublin under which the corduroy roads typical of viking sttlement have been found in rececent excavations for a multi-storied office building there!!these same roads of logs are found in novgorod in russia which was a norse site near the baltic river drainages in russia!!the irish there were also genetically tied to a tribe that came to northern ireland from scotland in roman times called the scottii!!this was an area which bred the picts, the blue-woaded warriors who fought betimes like the beserkers of norse saga without clothes or garments smeared with patterns draw in mud upon their naked bodies and branishing torches, axes and swords in the most lusty and orgiastic and bloodcurdling attacks in wild and fearless abandon!!only the latest dna technologies can give you the kind of truths that you seem to seek!!
