Gametophytes contain half the number of chromosomes needed for an plant. When two merge, they have a full complement, and that is a zygophyte.

gametophyte is the phase in life cycle plants where the male and female sex cells or the gametes. they are haploid. that is they have only half the number of chromosomes compared to parents.
when these male and female gametes fuse together they form ovum or zygote.this is the zygophyte.

male gamete + female gamete = zygote
(haploid) (haploid) (diploid)

i forgot that PHYTE is plant-related.

anyway, take out the root words for each.

GAMETE: sex cells. they always contain only half the chromosomal set. i dont know if this helps but think of it this way: GAMETE --> game ---> single ---> they can always flirt.

whereas, ZYGOTES: are fertilized. paired chromosomal set. taken.
