My fiance will most likely be leaving for Afghanistan at the beginning of 2007 and I was just wondering how the atmosphere is for the soldiers there. In the news (although I know you can't always trust the media) I always hear about terrible things that go on in Iraq, but I don't hear much about Afghanistan. Is the situation more or less dangerous there? He's already served a year in Iraq. I'd love to hear from any soldiers or their spouses who have served there or in both places. Thanks in advance.

As a US Marine who served in both places and got home last year I would say the sporadic attacks in Afghanistan without warning are the more likely danger cause Iraqi's announce in the paper and media where they are gonna attack unless occupation forces do not withdraw from that area this is not so with Afghansitan and like in some countries where terror is used as a weapon everything can be all nice and calm untill 1 event sets off a chain of violence without warning and yer hip deep in bullet casings and blood and guts of both your opponents and your fellow soldiers so that is what he has to look forward to

Sorry if I ruined your day but I am being honest about it and not sugar coating the actual truth since I was there

the Taliban is more dangerous in Afghanistan, and more powerful. I think that the dangers will be about the same though. Both countries are at war so it can't be safe. my best advice is try not to worry and don't post too many questions on here about that because you don't want to read peoples rude comments that will make you worry more.

Afghanistan my grandson is there now.He was wounded in his first ambush, his three mates were killed.Today after a month of healing he,s back in the field ,we wont hear from him till he,s back in base. These people don,t wear uiniforms so you don,t now who the hell to shoot and it,s the same in Iraq. I would tell your friend SHOOT FIRST ask questions later.

The chance of getting killed while driving is greater than the chance of being killed by hostile forces while serving in the military.

Worrying about future events over which you have no control is pointless.
