At least one of your parents must be British.

Morning,

I am in the process of going through this procedure myself, also as a result of my grandfather's birth certificate, he was Welsh, and I will describe to you the process I have travelled. The thing is that you need to be a citizen before you get the passport.

At the moment both South Africa and Britain are happy for you to hold 2 passports and so that little detail is sorted.

Its a fairly long process in terms of time -

My experience has been that while in SA I was able to apply for the ancestral visa, which is a 4 year working visa, which is put into your SA passport, I did that from SA before traveling to England.

The next step is to apply and gain indefinite leave to remain, you cannot apply for this before the 4 years is up, they will only consider your application within the last 2 weeks of your ancestral visa expiring.

You need to be holding that visa for at least a year before you are allowed to apply for citizenship. This is the final step. Once you have the citizenship you are free to apply for the passport.

I should warn you that this is actually quite an expensive excersise. In the end it will have cost me the best part of £ 1,000. Over a 5 year period.

Being a Grandchild is your last opertunity to apply, your children no longer qualify. Your parents would automatically get the passports and then you if they hold them, but if it skips a generation you have to go through the process I have just described.

One of your parents has to be British, or hold a British passport. This question is on the application form, and you have to provide the details of where they were born, or their passport number.
