Apparently this is a reference to the number of people that will get into heaven. 144,000. This is what the Jehovah's Witnesses believe and why they go door to door trying to convert people so you are amongst their number and are saved. Shame that there are more than 144,000 Jehova's witnesses....

It probably meant that John (later St. John) had been contemplating the nature of existence, and collected some very doubtful mushrooms to add to his daily meal.
You know how in dreams you just know something without being able to tie that knowledge to a particular part of the dream. Did he actually count a hundred and 44 thousand? Did he see all their names? Even at one every half-second, that is 20 hours duration.
Think of the times he lived in. What was the largest group of organised men he might have seen, each with banners giving names at their head? Roman Legions. Contrary to popular belief a Century of men typically had 80 men in it (rather than 100) and a legion was composed of 60 Centuries, so the host described by John was 30 legions. I'm not sure how many legions there were in John's time but it was somewhere between 25 and 50. So maybe his vision was a reconstruction of the thought that the whole might of the Roman army would one day be at the disposal of the Lamb.

Its from revelations.... The lamb is jesus christ, the 144,000 are saved jews( 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of israel) that will be sealed with the mark of god on their forheads during the tribulation period. They mark god's last form of grace and last invitation of mercy in the tribulation time.
Revelation 14
1And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.
2And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:
3And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

This is part of the vision that St. John had seen of the end of days that God had shown Him, and had documented it in the book of revelations.
The Lamb he saw simbolised Christ, who has always been refered to as the perfect lamb of sacrifice that would carry the sins of the world (hense, in the old testament, they used to sacrifice a lamb to seek forgiveness, a profecy of Christ's coming).
Mount Zion is one the highest mountains in the region, and jews of old used to symbolise it with the stair case that leads to heaven, because it is so high up.
The 144,000 is an arbitry figure that means many many many people who had followed Him, and their names on their foreheads means that they are named and known to Him (the lamb that sacrificed Himself for them). But there is no significance to the exact number, its only figuritively speaking.
so all up, it means that St. John saw what was simbolised in the vision, Christ standing in heaven with His children that were saved by Him, whom He knows and love one by one.
I hope this helps...God Bless.

This has to do with the return of Jesus. It is believed the 144,000 are Jewish saints in the tribulation period that evangelize and the Lamb is Jesus.

Nobody knows exactly what it means.
It may be just a symbolic number.
Based on the current history and religious practices of national Israel, it may also accurately describe the full number of Jews who finally decide to accept Jesus as Messiah.

agree with the others who have answered here. might add that these are the Jews not the Christians from the way our minister explained the number to us in Bible Study. but we are mortals and may not understand as we may take the number to literate when it may be symbolic
