This weekend I bought a TV off a friend and when I plugged it in nothing happened, it just wouldn't turn on. Then my TV which I have had for about 6 months stopped working, now all it does is buzzes at me, no matter where I plug it in. This has happened to 2 more TVs in this flat but I thought the the others were just because they were old. Is it likely to be a socket problem or something with the wiring perhaps. I am also worried because I plug my laptop into that socket too.

it is possible to have a problem with the socket, but the likely answer is not, domestics circuits are protected with fuses and most likely an RDC, if you use your laptop on this socket and it has been fine until this point then I would say that the problem is not the socket, as computers are far more sensetive to power problems than a television set, perhaps u have a problem with moisture or condensation. I think in all honesty that you have had some bad luck with your sets.

Could be spikes or surges coming down the wires through the house, maybe that socket is connected to something it shouldn't be (inside the walls or whatever). Definitely worth calling up your landlord and have it checked out by a professional, if it turns out to be the cause of your broken TV's then I'd ask your landlord for some sort of compensation (ask nicely at first...)

You are either unlucky or you may be experiencing power surges. Ask you neighbours if they have been having problems. Buy a surge protector (Socket) for your laptop, they are always advisable
