Its the "Hugh Grant" thing. Hollywood portrays us as all living in castles, wearing tweed, having "afternoon tea" and (for some reason) driving around 30 year old beatles/minis in an eccentric manner. Oh yeah and we all ride on double decker buses and use red phone boxes (when was the last time you saw one being used?!).
Its called stereotyping.
But our portrayal of them is no better - either hard nosed cocaine sniffing stockbrokers, mafia gangsters, hillbilly hicks or spoilt rich kids. I doubt any american would desire to fall into any of those categories.
Normal intelligent people understand though that there is a lot more to both countries than the media portrays.

this is response is to ashley- was just reading your response to this question and i was just curious why you seem to be, in your answer, guilty of the same thing you're accusing ALL americans of? Im a 25 year old mother of four, married to an irishman and living in the UK and the exact opposite of what your idea of an american is. As would be all of my family, and friends, and most of the people ive met in my lifetime as an american? Im not gonna defend our current government, but show me a country with honest politicians and ill show you a pony with wings. Would you judge all Germans by the same standards as hitler, or the french napoleon, etc, etc......? Its a shame that anyone should be ignorant, in a world where information about pretty much anything is available to most of us, at least the people of the world whom are lucky enough to have a clean water supply and whos opinions "count". But americans are a lot of warm and wonderful things alot of people ignore. I suppose its convenient to hate us, to blame the youngest civilised country in the world for everyones problems, but hey, we have thick skin, we can take it. I urge you to go to America, and not just the heavy-tourism states, but how about where Im from, Milwaukee. I know a few people who would pt you up and set a dinner plate for you sight unseen, because generosity is another "american" trait. I notice alot of your questions revolve around americans, you must be curious about us. P.S I love Neighbors.

For the same reason Americans expect me to talk just like the Crocodile Hunter because I'm Australian. In the US, Americans thought I was English because I didn't say "Crikey, mate!" every 2 seconds.
Americans do not educate themselves. If something is not American, Americans will not go out of their way to find it out. They go by stereotypes so they don't have to bother themselves and think
Americans have a limited sphere of reference. Why? Because American foreign policy at the moment is to seek out all things that are not American and kill it, destroy it or ignore it.
(Oh, and by the way, I'm a MAN. I have stubble in my photo. Ashley can be a boys name. But as an American, you wouldn't know that would you? That in Australia, Ashley is most likely to be a mans name! And its British, not "Brittish" Esme.)
