a road sign should always indicate distance to the centre of a town / city etc

I was given to understand that it goes from post office to post office. They used to be in the centre of town.
Perhaps this would be a big argument for not relocating some post offices to the local stationary shops. Just think of the expense of changing the distances on road signs.

Distances between Towns were conventionally measured, from and to the main Post Offices. Therefore the distance sign to a town, is to the Main post Office.

to city limits . also us highways have mile markers giving total miles that road is , state line to state line . highways going east and west show miles across state starting with mile 1 at west end, and mile ...whatever ... at the east end. hope i helped ya
