In OT times there were sacrifices. But they had the hope of Jesus. Remember he descended to lower parts... there was paradise.... and Matthew said the graves were opened and many saints were seen by many people. I believe Jesus ministered to them and then they went from Paradise to Heaven.

The same way they're saved today ... through faith in God's Messiah, even though they had only the promise, at the time they lived.
Those who, at the time Christ was crucified, weren't already in hell, were waiting in Paradise, (Abraham's Busom) and had the opportunity to see Jesus and accept him for who he was ... on faith.
Those who did, accompanied Jesus to heaven, in what was probably one truly spectacular "grand opening" ceremony.
Those who didn't accept Jesus, went to stay with their already chosen one ... Satan, the devil ... for eternity.
The same rules apply today, except there's no waiting.

as others have said those of the Jewish Faith practiced sacrifice according to the Jewish Law. the belief and customs of the people were followed to the letter or otherwise the covenant with GOD would be broken and severe punishment would take place. the Jewish People broke their covenant with GOD several times and the results are what we read in the Old and New Testaments.

Atonement for sin is the shedding of blood of an animal without blemish.
When Jesus died as the final 'Lamb', no more sacrifices will be accepted by God.
