Depression can cause and does cause insomia. (It can also cause the opposite). You can't sleep because your mind is busy going over and over stuff or going over nothing.

1. Don't sleep in the daytime and don't go to bed too early.
2. Wind down in the evening by not watching anything too demanding or disturbing.
3. Have a warm milky drink and go to bed in a well ventilated room.
4. Don't focus on whether you'll sleep or not. Take the time to physically relax your body and settle at least for this rest.

Sometimes, when depressed sleep just does not come and the hours even minutes go so slowly. Sleeping tablets - a short course may be able to re-establish your sleeping pattern but these are not for long term use and are addictive. Speak to your doctor about this.
I really have empathy as I have been depressed and sleep would not come.
Sometimes, I used to write down my thoughts whatever was in my head into a journal by my bed just to get them out.
I bought glow in the dark stars and stuck them on my bedroom ceiling to give the room a relaxed feel. If sleep didn't come, I'd concentrate on relaxing each body part again and again. Other times just give up and watch some tv. Good luck. I hope things improve for you.

First, let me say that I am responding to this at 4:13 AM. Second, it sounds like this insomnia has a serious detrimental effect on your life, and since it is serious I don't think that you should let some Yahoo have the final say on what you should do. Not even me. When you say that you had a psychologist for a while I am wondering how long? What did the two of you decide was the issue(s)? Why did you stop going? A pattern of disrupted sleep could be caused by any number of things, and only a doctor will be able to tell you what the most likely causes could be. If your doctor is recommending medication then I suggest that you take the advice of the professional. While I personally don't like the idea of sleeping pills, because they can be addictive, that is something that you and your doctor should discuss. It is nice that you want to respect your parent's wishes in this matter, but at 18 you are on the brink of having to be in charge of your life for many decades to come. Your first responsibility as an adult is to take care of you to the best of your ability. I am reasonably sure that your parent's want what is best for you, but their bias against anti-depressants might be based upon ignorance of the facts of the disease of depression. For what it is worth, I am in my 50's, and have avoided dealing with depression/bi-polar for most of my life. The results have not been particularly good, and the consequences have been costly and painful.

Insomnia with depression is common - the best thing is to take a sedating antidepressant in an evening.

Some antidepressants make you drowsy while others make you more alert. Keep going until you find one that suits and helps the insomnia

First yes you could have insomnia because of your depression, it is a common symptom. If you are not already seeing a doctor, please see one. If you are, there are drugs that can help you sleep without other side effects. Kolonipin is one of them. I do not suggest taking any over the counter sleeping aids as those can lead to a deeper depression then you already have.

Hi there,

The best way is treat the depression. Over the counter sleep medications will help but are very addictive. It is a better idea to avoid them.

Try to do deep breathing before you go off to sleep. Lie flat on your back. Take deep and slow breaths, hold for 2 seconds. Keep your attention on your breathing. If the mind wavers bring the attention gently back to the breathing. Do this for about 10 minutes or for as long as you want. Then gently roll on to your side and go to sleep.

Please work on your depression also. If you need some suggestions, I will be happy to give them.

I hope this helps

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.
